Devious humans have given green lasers a bad name. Aiming a laser at an aircraft or the flight path of an aircraft is illegal according to a 2012 U.S. federal law. Jail time awaits offenders. Don’t point at a police officer either....
But if you mind your manners, a green laser is one of the best tools available to amateur astronomers eager to share the wonders of the night sky with the public. There’s simply nothing better to point out constellations, comets, individual stars and satellites in the night sky. Amateurs love ’em! So does the public. Go to a star party and pop out the laser, and you’ll get everyone’s attention. There’s magic in being able to point out our favorite points of light with a beam of light.

For many people, handheld lasers of any color should to outlawed, just like Pit Bulls, because of the permanent damage they can do. You will find strong voices on either side of the discussion.

Actually red lasers are better. The green are higher powered and power the largest area of your macula. This is bad because while you are busy looking at green you eyes lose their dark adaptation. Actual astronomy parties use red lighted pointers because of thid

Remember those idiots a few years ago who said, “If a million of us shine a laser pointer at the same point on the moon at the same time, everyone will be able to see the dot!”?
Be aware - cheap green lasers can and often do emit dangerous amounts of invisible infared radiation.
The green wavelength emission is generally safe, however the invisible stuff can damage eyes.
Please take note of this it is not a myth.

I’ve got that warning on my laser. However, I think the lead that will come flying at a burglar, after he notices the laser, will be more harmful to his health.
I’ve got a green laser. I got it when I was taught a cool trick by an avid amateur astronomer on how it can help you locate objects without depending so much on your finder scope. I have a telrad finder scope now but still use the laser sometimes

Green laser also make for great survival signaling tools.
This is to assume you can even point the beam at a moving plane and hit it.
At a distance of 100 feet, try to shine a red laser beam on a stop sign holding it in your hand. Your hand is just not steady enough. It gets increasingly more difficult with the square of the distance.
I suggest a stop sign because it lights up bright red with a red laser. In pointing at a flying object, you wouldn’t have that visual feedback.
