I have no problem in saying they were fleeing persecution from Herod as that's what was happening.

And that's what makes them "refugees". Deal with it.

But to insinuate they were heading to another country is incorrect.

I didn't insinuate it. I stated it directly. Judea was not Egypt. Egypt was not Judea. Different countries.

Judea and Egypt were under Roman authority at the time.

So they were separate countries barely ruled from afar by the Roman emperor. People fleeing to one of those countries from persecution by the king of another of those nations can rightly be called "refugees". Really ... the pope doesn't have to be wrong about everything. The world won't collapse into a singularity if you admit that he has a point, here.

They are not countries! Are you dense? If you can't understand that. You couldn't even get the names right as you said Joseph took his family out of his home country (Israel) into another country (Egypt)...

>>Judea and Egypt were under Roman authority at the time.<<

> So they were separate countries barely ruled from afar by the Roman emperor.

Barely ruled afar???? Do you understand the importance of Egypt in the Roman Empire?

People fleeing to one of those countries from persecution by the king of another of those nations can rightly be called "refugees". Really ... the pope doesn't have to be wrong about everything. The world won't collapse into a singularity if you admit that he has a point, here.

Your postings betray a lack of knowledge of the Roman Empire and the general history of the time period.

You keep calling these countries when they're not. Reminds me of dimocrats continuing to call our country a democracy when we're not.

It's a simple progression of facts:

You and facts don't go together.

dude...you can't even get the names, entities and authorities correct.

As I said before...you show a lack of knowledge of the Roman Empire in this time period.

Keep trying to defend your pope though.

pope

Really, that's what it comes down to, doesn't it?

He's the pope. Therefore he must be wrong. All the time. About everything.

Pathetic.

As is your failed attempt to impose XXI Century concepts of governance onto the Roman Empire.

I’m not trying to complicate anything nor am I refuting simple “facts”. All I’m saying is that if you believe Scripture, God told them to flee to Egypt. You may call the Holy Family refugees, migrants, or gypsies for all I care. The Creator’s sovereignty trumps the sovereignty of all nations, rulers and borders. You don’t have to be a genius to understand what I was referring to.

If you’re looking for an argument, I suggest you look elsewhere. Nice talking to you.

Nope. It comes down to the fact you're clueless about the Roman Empire during this time period.

You said Joseph and family were fleeing the country of Israel.

There was no country of Israel during this period.

If you can't admit that then your more obtuse than you've let on so far in this discussion.

Your pope is trying to use this story, out of context I might add, to support illegal immigration in this country and whatever is happening in Europe.

Bad understanding of the texts again leading to bad theology. All to common in Roman Catholicism.

My points, previously stated on this thread, are as follows:

1) Jesus, Mary and Joseph absolutely were refugees for a time in Egypt.

2) Their conduct as refugees (living peaceably in Egypt, returning home when able) was exemplary. Today’s refugees could (and should) learn from them and emulate them.

3) A whole lot of people posting on this thread know less about the Bible than they think they know.

I direct your attention in particular to (2).

As regards (3), I direct your attention to the numerous posters blathering pointlessly about the trip to Bethlehem.

As to your endless pettifogging about the meaning of a “country” ... I find that you do a really good job of missing the point.

Good Bye.

As regards (3), I direct your attention to the numerous posters blathering pointlessly about the trip to Bethlehem.

I direct posters to your incorrect analysis of:

You said Joseph and family were fleeing from Israel to Egypt. There is no Israel at this time.

Your first screw up was to suggest pharaoh ruled Egypt. It took several posting for you to admit it was run by Rome.

Then you attempt to suggest Egypt was run from afar showing a lack of understanding of the importance of Egypt to Rome.

As I said before, I have no problem in saying they fled to Egypt to avoid persecution by Herod.

But to attempt to use this as a justification to allow illegal immigration is incorrect in that they were fleeing from one province of the Roman Empire to another. They were not fleeing from Honduras to the US.

I’m sure Francis has read the Communist Manifesto. Whether he’s read the Bible or understands it is anybody’s guess.

The Pope is driving the liberal bandwagon, telling his flock to jump on.

It’s not difficult, but I refuse to play along with liberal talking points, and that’s what this is.

Sorry, you’ve been hoodwinked.

I see that you decline to actually address the point in any of my posts. Further conversation with you is therefore pointless, and I bid you (too) Good Bye.

There is a perfectly good "fixer upper" papal palace in Avignon France! All it needs is a Pope to occupy it. It even is large enough for a roost for cardinals!😀

Glad you used the word “obtuse”. I was going to if I got another response but fortunately for me, my sister, who I hadn’t talked to for a couple of weeks, called and got me out of this pissing contest. Some folks on FR just can’t accept losing an argument. I think you stung him quite nicely. ;o)
