Skier killed in avalanche at Nevada mountain

A skier was lost in an avalanche this weekend. It happened in western Nevada at the Mount Rose Ski Resort near Lake Tahoe.

The search for the missing skier ended Sunday after crews found a body in 8-to-10 feet of snow.

The 64-year-old man was last seen on the the “jack pot chute,” an expert slope that wasn’t ready for skiers yet.

On Saturday, as a storm moved in, officials said avalanche danger was high.

Bob Harmon with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said two skiers went around a gate and hiked to the top. Hiking team returns to Everest for first time since deadly avalanche Play Video Hiking team returns to Everest for first time since deadly avalanche

“This was a closed area and the skiers obviously made a decision that they wanted to make a run there and obviously this did not work out for the best,” said Harmon.

The search for the missing skier ended Sunday after crews found a body in 8-to-10 feet of snow.

In addition to terminal political bias in the media, their penchant for verbosity is just as bad.

OF COURSE THE BLEEDING SEARCH ENDED! THEY FOUND WHAT THEY WERE SEEKING! THE ISSUE IS THE BODY, NOT THE SEARCH!

The sentence 'Rescue crews located the body in 8-10 feet of snow' is just as informative and just as complete.

I want J-school grads to wear mandatory signs so that we can identify them in public and possibly step on their toes.

When you ride the bull sometimes you get the horns. I was skiing out at Canyons resort some years ago and it had rained, then froze. This huge gated bowl was closed due to unskiable ice crust. I moved on to ski Alta and Snowbird and meanwhile it snowed about 18 inches. Later I heard some knuckleheads went through the closed gate to ski that bowl at Canyons. The entire thing 1/2 mile wide slid burying the rash skiers under 60 feet of snow at the bottom of the bowl. They were not recovered till spring. Moral of the story - the expert Avi personnel at the resorts know a hell of a lot more than you do.

At 8,000 feet, it rained 5 inches on top of 10 feet of snow.

Those "closed" signs on a trail should be heeded. A death that could have been easily avoided.

Scariest sign I came up on at Squaw Valley ===> Warning - cliff area. Oops, not a fun trail while skiing.

Some idiot who thinks a lift ticket is actually the deed to the mountain.

Mt. Rose is the closest slope to Reno. The resort sank a considerable amount of money into adding a lift for this particular face of the hill. It is extremely challenging terrain and has specific gates, inside the park, for entry and exit. Due to its steepness and the heavy water content of some storm snow it is common for “the Chutes” to be closed and/or open later than the remaining portions of the resort. There is no way to enter by accident.

It’s too bad, but really, I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.

“Say let’s go around this gate and ski down a mountain known for avalanche’s”.
“Good idea, let’s go!”

Always pay attention to signs. There is a great one on 4x4 road up above Virginia City that says ‘Warning Certain Death” to indicate a nasty undrivable downhill section. Wish we had gotten a picture of it.

” heavy water content of some storm snow it is common for “the Chutes” to be closed “

And we had a ton of rain here last week.
