I’m sorry you feel that way.
I have always loved that book. The children were so torn by their Father’s stance and they learned so much about living your conscience and the cost.
I read it about 50 years ago. My memory could be incorrect.
But, it is a novel. As a novel, it forwards a particular understanding of the world. In this case, it seems to be an understanding of a New York editor, about the South and how it worked.
That’s why public schools in Mississippi in the 1960s didn’t want their innocent white students to read it. It was contraband. Teachers had to keep their copies under lock and key. I’m not sure about how black teacher in their equal schools handled the book.
Proud to be counter-cultural.
When I read I suffer from suspension of disbelief so I am a more forgiving reader than some.
It is, as you say, a novel and to my mind a good one since I was engaged and spent time after reading the book thinking about the characters and how they were affected by the events. Atticus’s example of quiet heroism was inspiring.
Agreed.
Sarc tag? Harper Lee...
Well..her name is on the cover.
As long as you are having fun, go for it!
I’ve never had the slightest interest in reading works of fiction so I don’t know.
So, at last the mask has slipped off, and we know that these people are a bunch of totalitarians. It is a very short step from banning books to burning them. We all know what comes after that: an attempt to totally control our thoughts by “cleansing” society of “bad thoughts” and “bad people.”
Phuck that noise!!!!
Your teacher mustn't have taken the time to explain the time, societal conditions and human tendencies.
It's my belief that many of the classics are presented too soon because it takes a bit more experience to be able to appreciate them.
