Albino Deer Blamed for Serious Motorcycle Wreck
KFOR ^ | DECEMBER 2, 2016 | LANCE WEST

Posted on 12/03/2016 11:02:47 PM PST by nickcarraway

Witnesses say the accident looked so bad, they thought the motorcycle had been crushed by a car.

The rider lost control of his bike on the bridge at 5th and Oklahoma Thursday night.

It wasn't a car, but it was an albino deer that caused the accident.

"I wouldn't want to hit a squirrel on a motorcycle, let alone a deer," Game Warden Wade Farrar said.

Wildlife officials say deer are on the move right now looking for food and a mate.

"So they have been covering a lot of ground. The male looking for a girlfriend, basically," Farrar said.

Guthrie police say the motorcycle didn't strike the deer, but the rider swerved and lost control.

"You can see the scrape marks and the bike is losing contact with the road of the pavement, tumbling," Sgt. Anthony Gibbs told NewsChannel 4.

The rider was thrown more than 100 feet.

His bike came to rest about a football field length from where he first hit the brakes.

"When officers arrived on scene, they applied first aid. He was unconscious," Gibbs said.

The victim was flown to an Oklahoma City hospital with critical head and spine injuries.

Authorities say he was not wearing a helmet.

Wildlife officials say this is a reminder to all motorists to be aware of the road and the unexpected obstacles that may be lurking in the woods.

"If you see eyes in the ditch, it's a great idea to slow down. It could be a fatal situation," said Farrar.

It’s one of my biggest fears, especially driving through country roads at night.

A deer can really damage a car.

You talking about hundreds of pounds of sheer weight.

The term “deer frozen in the headlights” has real life impact.

Try a 6 lane freeway in broad daylight if you want a real thrill. According to the state police the deer survived without being struck after jumping the cement barriers and crossing 3 lanes of cars. All because the guy behind me just had to get by me because I slowed down and his screeching of the brakes spooked her to jump into the opposing lanes.

That isn't the real problem with deer. If they would stay put, there would be much less of a problem. But what they do is emerge from the woods/brush at top speed and the driver doesn't have enough time to react. Even when they are standing still, they will sometimes panic and do unpredictable things.

The bottom line is that the deer population in many areas is way out of control, and there is little incentive to do anything about it. When they try, they have to deal with animal rights activists picketing and filing lawsuits.

I do not know. I got bit by a squirrel in heat once. Savage lil critters.

I could imagine what they could do to a bike once they got their teeth into it.

I saw an albino buck at a state park right near my home recently and couldn’t believe they even exist.

Actually, this is not a rare occurance. I have a cousin who had this same experience. Was riding home from work (worked swing shift) about 1:00am going west on I-20 just outside Fort Worth and a deer jumped out in front of him and took down his Harley. Luckily, he stay with the bike for most of the slide but still had busted rubs, concussions, missing skin. He’s ok now and back riding. Gotta love those Harley guys, lol!

I remember an episode of "Newhart" about a great white buck which was believed to bring good luck to the town on those rare occasions when it made an appearance. The townspeople were overjoyed because, after several years, there had been a sighting of the buck. Their joy was short lived, however, after Bob Newhart accidentally slams into it with his car.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. That legend of Virginia Dare is supposed to be she came back as an albino deer.
