A Costa Mesa man who loudly played the Guns N' Roses song "Used to Love Her" and sang along to the lyrics "I used to love her, but I had to kill her" was convicted Wednesday of doing just that to his live-in girlfriend.
Thomas Michael Wilhelm, 52, could be sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison at a Santa Ana hearing scheduled for Feb. 3.
Just before 6:30 p.m. on July 8, 2012, an intoxicated Wilhelm entered a neighbor's home on Redwood Avenue, stole a handgun and returned to his home.
Christine Marie Murray, his 45-year-old girlfriend and business partner of three years, sent text messages to a friend stating that Wilhelm was intoxicated, blaring Axl Rose & Co. and singing the lyrics that would prove to be prophetic.
Eleven minutes after that text, Wilhelm walked into Murray's bedroom, pulled out the stolen firearm and shot her six times. Out of ammunition, he returned to his neighbor's home, stole a shotgun and fired one round into the ground of the neighbor's backyard in an unsuccessful attempted to shoot himself.
Costa Mesa police officers, who'd been called by nearby residents, were already on the scene to hear the shotgun discharge. They burst into Wilhelm's home to find Murray in her bedroom, unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds to her chest.
As Wilhelm was apprehended and the guns were recovered, Murray was rushed to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where she was pronounced dead.
As the Weekly previously reported, Wilhelm posted messages on the website of Tom Wilhelm Sprinkler Co. Inc. that claimed Murray and a fired co-worker forced him out of his own company.
Hmmm. Ladies, if you hear your husband whistling this, run.
Song is about his cat.
He just didn’t pay attention to the bigger message... the song right before that on the album was “Patience”.
When the killer was told this, he replied “Oh crap - my CAT!?”
Guns N’ Roses fans a budding murderers.
GnR fans are fat middLe Aged guys like me :(
And it was a pet.
Tragic yet kind of funny story.
If YOU heard your boyfriend singing that while drunk around a gun, you MIGHT think of leaving the house.
ROFL!
Although very extreme, my favorite off that was “One in a Million”
“Hey, Joe”
Neighbor will probably get charged with an insecure firearm violation...
When she should have called 911. Poor lady.
This guy epitomizes the phrase: "Doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground." Aimed at head, hit ground instead...
I was pondering a song I heard on the radio as I was driving yesterday. It was Jimi Hendrix singing about a man who shot his woman when he caught her with another man. Would anyone record that song today?
There’s also “Bring Me My Shotgun” by Lightnin’ Hopkins.

Woah, go bring me my shotgun
Oh I’m gonna start shootin again
Go bring me my shotgun
You know I just got to start shootin’ again
You know I’m gonna shoot my woman
Cause she’s foolin’ around with too many men
Yes bring me my shotgun
Yes man and a pocket full of shells
Yes go bring me my shotgun
Yes man and a pocket full of shells
Yeah you know I’m gonna kill that woman
I’m gonna throw her her in that old deep dug well
Hide her from everybody they won’t know where she at
That woman said Lightnin’ you can’t shoot me
She said now you just dare to try
I don’t take a dare from nobody
She said Lightnin’ you can’t shoot me
She said yes and you dare to try
I said the only reason I don’t shoot you little woman
My double barrel shotgun, it just won’t fire
