Iconic Franchises—Then and Now
Wall Street Journal ^ | 11/20/16 | Elizabeth Garone

Every iconic franchise began somewhere. Every one started with a single store opening its doors to a public that had never heard of it and didn’t know what to expect. These entrepreneurs had no idea what they were launching—and no inkling that their concept would take the world by storm.

What did these original outlets look like? What do they look like now? Some of the world’s biggest chains have preserved their first stores so customers can get a look.

After the 'sturm und drang' (storm and stress = turmoil) of this election season, I agree with the WSJ that this is a good time to look at this more calming topic, a glimpse of the '1st stores' of these definitive fast-food chains. Look at the prices and realize the changes. Look at the cars and see those changes as well!

I do love the bit of real Americana one gets from the last lines about the original McDonal's site in San Bernardino CA, where a non-McDonald's entrepreneur made his own McDonalds museum. A gentleman with an apparent Japanese name, Albert Okura, who made his own fortune in Southern California with a Mexican Chicken chain, Juan Pollo, honoring the McDonald-Kroc legacy!

I have been to Sanders Court in Kentucky. It is pretty enlightening.
“Colonel” Sanders was a hard working guy who promoted himself and his products in a lot of different ways. He was a truly remarkable man!

Nice article. I would have liked to have seen Burger King, Wendy’s and White Castle as well.

Getting a chicken sandwich at the “Dwarf House” with little doors and pics and statues of dwarfs all around isn’t creepy?

Keep in mind - I live near Mt. Horeb WI - with trolls all around. Dwarves aren’t creepy, compared to trolls! :-)
