A Turkish government proposal which would pardon some people imprisoned for statutory rape in the past decade has fallen short of passage by legislators.
The proposal would defer sentencing or punishment for sexual assault in cases where there was no force and where the victim and perpetrator were married. Following the defeat late Thursday, the government is bringing the proposal back for consideration next week.
An earlier law, abolished in 2005, said there is no crime if the couple marry.

16 year olds marrying is not the worst thing in the world.
If they hold the age at 16 and there is no forced marriage, I don’t see the problem.
This being a Muslim country, I suppose there could be twelve year old sixteen year olds and the family arranging the marriage without much concern for the wishes of the bride.
So it would not have been the worst thing in the world if Mahomet had only waited until Aisha was 16, then.
No, it would have been a lot better than it is now, wouldn’t it? All those Muslims following the example of the perfect man would have to wait.
Until sixteen. Which is of course still too blasted young.
