The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Hi to all. Really great day here in Missouri. Yesterday was gloomy and overcast-aftermath of rain. Spent the day at Dr. for Hubby and Dental appointment for me with lunch and exploration of Schnucks Grocery in a town about 40 miles away. They had some great finds in the dairy department, and I got some butter and cheese that is not available in our local store.

Hubby is back at work, foot is much better, but still too much swelling. Podiatrist stated he needs to massage it to break up the scar tissue-if I understood correctly.

Have taken advantage of the mild weather and sun shine (which makes me feel more like moving) to do clean up on the two patio areas that we use most for gardening activities as well as the garden beds.

Still getting enough tomatoes from the volunteers to have 3 or 4 cherries to add to salads. Lettuce, endive, spinach and garlic are well on the way.

I am taking off in a few minutes to take my grand daughter to town - school is out today. Then I have to do some exchanges at Walmart, and Daughter has changed my workout day to Friday. So it will be a while, but I will be back.

I would like to make a prayer request for my sister, who has just learned that she has a huge mass in her lungs (was coughing up blood) and it is likely untreatable cancer.

Hope everyone is doing well. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Hey, Green eyes. Prayers for your hubby and Sis.
We’re having some much needed rain in Central TX. Picked some cucuzza and peppers which are the only things in my garden right now.

We got a good bit of rain earlier in the week here in Central Missouri, but it has cracked off clear and warm since then.

Work has been kicking my butt this week, but I’ve managed to get a bit of cleanup done in the tomato patch in the evenings. There’s a bit more weed fabric to be picked up, which I hope to accomplish this weekend.

I’m still getting tomatoes and peppers, and have a mountain of green beans that need to be picked and canned.

Prayers for your sister greeneyes.

We've got all our beds cleaned up for the winter, which is coming soon to NY.

Pinging the list... I am going to relocate my 5 year old Asparagus to a sunny place in my yard and hopefully double the output over the next week or so here in North Carolina.

Augie :" There’s a bit more weed fabric to be picked up, which I hope to accomplish this weekend."

Is the weed fabric reuseable ?
or is saving it too much of a hassle ?
If it is reuseable , how many seasons does it last ?

Dig double deep down, a lot of compost.
Asparagus beds at Monticello have been bearing asparagus since planting in 1780's
but are dug up about every 50 years to enrichen the soil.
Free leaves and compost at Town and Village Road Superintendents garages where they collect the leaves in Fall.
Avoid sewage treatment plants as the sludge generally contains many 'heavy metals', like lead and mercury.

Glad to hear the hubby is back to work and still recovering.
A foot massage is one of the most relaxing treatments one can give , and receive, even if medically required.
Foot elevation in lounge chair, and even at night with the leg over a pillow of two will reduce swelling.
Sorry to hear about your sister, it doesn't sound good.
Prayers Up now and tonight !

Is it Friday, already? :)

Hurray for butter and cheese! Wheeee!

I wish I had fun things to report, garden-wise, but I’m pretty much done for the season. And yet, the KALE remains, LOL!

Beau is back from Elk Hunting in WY. He got skunked, but is going to CO week after next, so there’s still hope. He brought back some awesome shed horns and a bunch of really nice pine cones for me for Christmas Decor. This is my first Christmas at the farm, so I’m going to decorate everything, ‘naturally.’

I have all kinds of evergreen boughs to use, red twig dogwood and lots of pretty Birch branches/logs by the fireplace, etc. That’ll keep me busy for a few weeks, hunting and gathering around the property. :)

Supper will be baked chicken, butternut squash (from the garden) and a salad - with some KALE in it! (Please make it stop, LOL!)

Our weather has been amazing. We haven’t even had a hard freeze yet...and that usually happens in mid-October. The lawn looks shaggy, but it’s November; I’ll be d@mned if I’m mowing any more, LOL!

I’ll post a few more garden/farm/pet pictures in a bit. Gotta go do the afternoon Dog/Puppy/Barn Cat/Raccoon/Mule chores. Life Is Good!

The weed fabric I’m using is claimed by the manufacturer to be good for three seasons. This is the first year that I’ve used it so I can’t say yet if that’s going to be the case, but it doesn’t seem to be much worse for the wear so far.

The stuff isn’t terribly expensive, but I’m not going to toss it out. I’m sure it will be a serious nuisance to put it down the second time since it’s no longer rolled up on a nice cardboard tube.

Still experimenting...

I am trying something different this year.

I dug up two healthy tomato plants in my garden trimmed them back and planted them in my double 5 gallon buckets. I have a sliding glass door that faces the south and going to try to keep them going this winter. Fresh tomatoes at Christmas sounds good.

Wow.
Good luck with that !

I always believed tomatoes just “ran out of gas” in the fall and couldn’t last.

Am so sorry about your sister - I will put her on my prayer list.

Finally got the garlic in the ground this week.
Rest of the gardens have been cleaned and covered, except for the one with spinach, lettuce, and kale.
Chickens have been moved to their "winter residence" near the house - warmer for them and easier for us.

Will be at the polls all day Tuesday (asst registrar), making sure no cheating is going on (at my polling place, anyways).

Actually they don’t. It gets cold and they freeze. I’ll keep every one here up to date on how the plants are doing this winter.

"I need to plant garlic cloves for next year..."

Laid in three dozen cloves - still leaves us plenty of bulbs until they come up in June.
Two inches down, six inches apart - cover with about 6 inches of mulch.
Good luck!
