This is my main lament. Public schools use sight-words to teach reading, which virtually guarantees illiteracy.
A lot of these kids have a sight-word vocabulary of 200 or 500 or even 1000 words. They are trained to limp along, to guess, to behave exactly as you and I would behave if we were in Japan struggling with a limited vocabulary.
Even the ones who can supposedly read cannot read for pleasure. Reading is hard work for a sight-word victim. Stopping this abuse is the first step toward genuine education reform.
