Five years old. My youngest son was 5 only two years ago. They are BABIES.

Well, ONE five-year-old son does NOT make a philosophy for a police department to follow. I've taught all ages and you CANNOT call ALL five year old boys BABIES. The Catholic Church does NOT consider the "age of reason" SET at seven or six or five. The child merely has to understand what is going on, as in receiving Holy Communion. They do NOT make a gender distinction.
SOME boys and girls have that "reason" and some don't. There is no gender distinction.

It's really a moot question. But I DO KNOW brats when I see/hear them. I think you can "hear" the difference between a child's screams. Some are exhausted. Some are angry. Some are in real pain. Some want something that parents aren't giving them. Some are TESTING their boundaries. Some are just whiny. I can sure tell the difference and I bet you can too.

Prostitutes don't become prostitutes because they had a temper tantrum as a five year old. THEIR problems started, I bet, with DRUGS. The drugs started, possibly, with a mother who never bothered to get married and started into "the life."
I've read often and often that if one takes a toll of the prison inmates, male OR female, the absence of ANY father is always there. Physical brutality also takes its toll and THAT may come from the abuse of a drug addict father or mother.

=========================================

If you want us to be a society where five-year-olds are working down the mines, then just wait for the global socio-economic collapse. They’ll be prostitutes, too.
Do you HONESTLY expect a "global socio-econmonic collapse" in the foreseeable future if screaming five-year-olds aren't comforted IMMEDIATELY?
Do you REALLY expect five-year-olds to be working in mines in the foreseeable future if screaming five-year-olds aren't comforted by a police officer IMMEDIATELY upon demand?

I dunno.
I taught the first grade in a tiny little town for a year. They were CUTE as a button. We didn't know anyone in town and I didn't work. So the first-grade assignment was welcome.
When my husband and I would go "downtown" every SIX-YEAR-OLD in town would know me and say "HI." Lol. No one ELSE knew me but those wonderful little ones made me feel at home!

I ended up teaching at the college level but was ALWAYS READY to teach college OR first graders. BOTH were fabulous. I liked second grade too and MOST third graders.
The 4th graders lived to argue and argued to live. Sigh. There's where I drew the line. College or little ones.

“I think I’m going to throw up.
Am I being insensitive?”

Maybe, but maybe this kid doesn’t have a father, mom carries the kid around all day and the kid never gets enough sleep. Etc.

It is a statement not that kids are weak but that parents forgot how to let kids grow up.

Many forces in his life will try to convince this young boy that all police officers want to shoot him because he’s black. Hopefully he will know better, deep in his guts.

Well, in the end this ONE incident isn't going to be the deciding factor in his life. Children learn to respect police officers OR hate them from their daily lives from the cradle.
Parents set the tone. ONE officer cuddling a boy makes international news. It's NOT international news that the black community STILL has an incredibly HIGH rate of teen pregnancy, fatherless children and incarceration.

There is a weekly T.V. program called "CRIPS and BLOODS" and it's about the life of these young men (mostly) and what they have to deal with. RARELY is there a father in the picture. RARELY is there absence of drugs.

Google it: Crips and Bloods: Made in America. It takes place in Los Angeles. I watch it only once in a while as it's pretty depressing. Those young men don't stand a chance. It's not news. Some cop doing one good thing wouldn't make much, if any, difference in those lives.

What IS missing is the faith part. There is NO message that these young men are getting ANY faith instruction OR example from ANYONE.
Religion isn't mentioned...only the "socio-economic" issue. THAT screamed out to me. Where are all the pastors?!

True.
At least you didn't give me the "whatever" response.

The weekly program CRIPS AND BLOODS, filmed in Los Angeles, shows the lives of those young men. Those young men don't stand a chance. DRUGS, fatherless families, absence of ANY faith figures, male or female: THESE are the problems of that segment of America.

One nice police office doing one nice thing isn't going to change the OVERWHELMING statistics on DRUGS, black unemployment, DRUGS, GIRLS having baby after baby after baby and getting federal/$tate money for them, DRUGS and a seemingly TOTAL absence of Christian culture.
No pastors around. No churches having bake sales to raise funds for the homeless. No ministers calling out for chastity before marriage, or MARRIAGE first.

A black secretary of state in California once lined it out:
1. education
2. job
3. marriage
4. children

She was correct of course. THAT should be the order of business for all children. But she was called a racist by SOME who didn't have a clue as to the dynamics of human psychology.

I’m sure that having a police officer act coldly toward the boy would have helped, somehow.

There, you win.

One photo of one incident does not a lifetime make. That one viral photo could make a huge difference in the life of that child. It might bring attention to him that would not have otherwise happened. Good attention. A lifetime of attention. We do not know what will come if anything. Maybe that photo is an answer to a single mother’s prayers for help. We don’t know God’s plan for that boy’s life or for that officer. Or that school. Or that town. Etc.

I never surrender: I just leave ;-). We’ll put our kids to bed in less than a half hour - those who use this computer - and then I drop every argument.

“Those young men don’t stand a chance”

Yep. They are not stupid and lazy, they are taught to be that way.

Yep. They are not stupid and lazy, they are taught to be that way.

It's heartbreaking.
All that human potential.

I have an old friend in Texas. She lived in a smallish town and taught at their high school, all black. My friend is white.

She was very upset that so many of the girls got pregnant and didn't finish school. She finally had a chat with the local Baptist (black) minister.
She told him her worries and he said that he knew the problem but if he EVER spoke out about it, telling them to be chaste until marriage or EVEN MENTION it, he would be out of a job in five minutes.

He could go ON and ON about stealing, killing, abortion, lying and so on...but EVEN MENTION all those girls getting pregnant out of wedlock? NEVER.

It was ALL ABOUT MONEY as those girls, their mothers, their grandmothers AND their great grandmothers had all done the same thing and wanted NO CHANGE: statue quo.

And, he was smiling at the officer when he left the building. Such a positive outcome to his bad day will stay with him for a long time.

Why are cops even there, are you kidding me.

Yep, that’s why it’s so “emotional” the cop isn’t shooting anyone.

If you had read the article, you would have read that the location of the incident was in the Indiana State Capitol building (where the Gov has his office).

I would presume that is the reason for the Capitol Police.
