We might be stating the obvious here: You should always approach an animal with caution after it has been shot, especially a ticked-off black bear.
In all fairness, who would think a bear could survive a fall out of a tree that high after being shot three times? But regardless, this young man learned the hard way . . . never jump the gun too fast after shooting a bear.
Bears will often let out what is known as a death moan as the animal is taking its last breaths, so it’s a good idea to wait for that signal before approaching the downed animal. That said, not all bears emit a death moan, so caution is always advised.
Fortunately for this young man (who was probably so close to the base of the tree because he was trying to control the dogs), he was left with only a few cuts and scrapes, because this easily could have ended in disaster.

I hate when I try to cheer up a black bear that is down, and it attacks me.
That would be “unfortunately”. If you shoot a bear out of a tree then a mauling is justly deserved.
I guess that depends on if you’re a hunter or not....
Wow! First thing I thought of was an old FACES OF DEATH video in which a bear attacks a ranger and tears his arm off.

I am a hunter, and I was taught as a kid, that if you’re not going to eat it, don’t shoot it. If it is killing your livestock or pets, that’s another matter.

Exactly...Black Bear meat is very tasty BBQ’d and also ground for burgers...Just make sure you trim ALL the bear fat away and add beef fat to your ground bear meat...
You cook bear fat and it’ll run you out of the house...
Those dogs in the picture are Blue Tick, Walkers and a Mountain Cur...They are OK for bear, but you can’t beat a Plott Hound for bear or hogs...

In Pennsylvania, where neither is legal, they do drives with gangs of men. Mr youngest who is a straping built athelete was excited to go to bear camp with a group. I warned him. He came back after walking his line through the thick saying he had never been so tired in his life, he could have stepped on a bear and he didn't have the strength to even lift his 270wsm.
I don't have hounds but when they ask at my place in WV if they can run bear I say absolutely yes. My wife keeps bees.
A good bear is a scared (and scarce) bear and dogs keep them that way.

A Walker treeing coon hound? I’ve heard those dogs will try to climb the tree.

For coons, it is hard to beat a Walker or a Black and Tan...
I have a beautiful Treeing Walker girl, made her into a pet. She was dumped, nearly run over before I called her to my car. Gun shy I guess. She settled right into the softer life like she was born to it, but took a while to learn the meaning of Shhh! They can raise quite a racket. She’s treed a few coons in the backyard, so she’s still got it in her.
When I was young, I read a book about a great lion hunter in Africa.
The author was amazed at the hunter’s “Lion Dogs”.
None of them looked the same and they were all different sizes.
The author was confused. He thought that there must be a special breed of dogs to track and tangle with lions.
The hunter said no, he just got them from the dog pound.
The author was aghast. The hunter was using any old kind of dog? Wouldn’t some of the dogs be killed?
The hunter said yes, some of the dogs would be killed, but look at the life they had now. They were well fed and snoozing on the porch. They weren’t waiting in some miserable cage for someone to come and give them the final shot.
The hunter said that if he were a dog, he would want to die fighting lions instead of waiting in the dark for a needle.
Dear God, please let me go down fighting lions. Amen.
