I recall a story that he rescued his mother when she fell overboard as they were trying to escape Cuba.

“Jose Fernandez -the NL Rookie of the Year in 2013 - came to the United States by boat as a 15-year-old Cuban refugee in 2008. Along the way, he rescued his mother, who had fallen overboard. However, his beloved grandmother, who Fernandez calls a “baseball freak,” was left behind.

“She’s the love of my life... my everything,” Fernandez said.

The day before winning the Rookie of the Year Award, a shocked Fernandez was reunited with his grandmother in Florida with help from Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria.

Most of us have made some bad decisions somewhere along the way and were a lot more lucky than this.

Yes, it is very sad.

Yes, the human race would have died out long ago if most of us didn’t survive the dumb things we do.

Re: “Colon Crapper should take a lesson”

Yes, good point. Fernandez risked his life to come here [from Communist Cuba], and get his family here. He saved his mom in the water...

Interesting note ...

Many professional contracts include language that voids the contract if the player engages in certain types of activities that elevate the risk of injury or death. Riding off-road vehicles, piloting an aircraft, and even something as simple as playing sports outside the player's professional training are some of these.

This came into play as players started getting paid enormous salaries under guaranteed contracts.

If I fled from Cuba like that, I’d probably never get on a boat smaller than an aircraft carrier for as long as I lived.

The guy had an amazing home record—and was going to be a major obstacle to the Mets playoff chances.

One of my close friends in the early 1980s when I lived in Miami was a Cuban-born escapee. He absolutely detested when liberals would praise Castro. My friend has since passed. He would be apoplectic at the sight of someone praising Castro to such extent.

Photo posted on ESPN.com ...

Facts reported in the ESPN story up to this point:

1. Fernandez was a passenger in the boat.

2. The Coast Guard found the boat on the rocks at 3:30 AM.

3. I've seen no indication that there was even a report of the incident before the Coast Guard arrived on the scene.

Makes me wonder if they went to the wrong side of an inlet.

Whoops

Been out there in the dark and looking down from an aircraft....much caution is advised and toot, booze and dark of night in an ocean racer don’t mix

Sorry for the enormous photo, folks. I’d usually shrink it while posting it, but in light of the nature of the story I thought folks would want to see it at its highest resolution.

I know what you mean. I agree.

I would think the team wouldn’t approve of him being out there at 3:00am.

I guessed it blasting in at a excessive rate of speed in the dark and missed the inlet.

I spent 6 years flying SAR in that area lots of idiots out there.

Pretty tragic now, but at least they had the joy of being reunited. He was a star, I don’t think the Nats ever beat the man.

Haven’t heard it mentioned in a while, but I know at one time there was a big push for pro sports contracts to have clauses banning dangerous activities such as motorcycling.
