I knew a young German girl who’s mother was receiving some kind of government assistance as she was a starving artist without much income. The daughter was highly outraged when she learned that this income and also the money she’d been gifted from her grandfather would be counted against the amount of financial aid she received for college tuition, room and board, fees, international enrichment travel, new bicycle, art supplies, new phone, and other “necessities”. Why, that was “her” money, how dare the government count it!
