Idea to Fix the Nation

Ideas to fix the nation

1. Term limits. No elected representative will serve more than 12 years in office.
2. Sovereign immunity protections will be repealed, so that government officials can be liable for damages.
3. Any law that applies to the American people will also apply to Congress Thus, they will be subject to Obamacare, social security, medicare (no gold plated benefits that the rest of us pay for but can’t afford for ourselves) and numerous regulations that now only apply to the little people.
4. In the event of US military operations overseas, the children of federal office holders, between the ages of 18-35, will be required to serve four years in the US military.
5. Overseas military operations in Europe, Asia and the Middle East will cease, unless Congress issues a declaration of war. Several US military bases overseas shall gradually be phased out.
6. The tax code and IRS will be scrapped. All income (whether earned, dividends or cap gains) will be taxed at progressive rates of 10, 15 and 20%, depending on income. All combined federal taxes and fees, including social security/medicare, shall not exceed 30% of income. States will be free to impose state and local taxes they deem appropriate.
7. The federal government will be downsized, beginning with the elimination of the Dept of Education, the EPA, HUD, Dept of Commerce, Dept of Energy, and the Dept of Homeland Security, Dept of Labor, Dept of HHS – to begin with.
8. The office of Attorney General shall be an elective office.
9. There shall be eight Justices of the Supreme Court. They will be limited to 12 year terms and shall be elected by Congress, four by Democrats and four by Republicans. Justices will be subject to impeachment based on a 2/3 majority of Congress.
10. Congressional power shall be limited by Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution (enumerated powers). Congress and the Executive branch may exercise only the powers that the Constitution grants them (including subsequent amendments).
11. The Sherman Antitrust Act (15 U.S.C.) will be enforced to all US business entities, including all healthcare companies.
12. The Patriot Act shall be repealed. It shall be deemed illegal for any government agency to monitor or collect data on citizens without a warrant.
13. All voting must be done in person, using paper ballots that will be preserved until the election outcome can be certified without dispute. Only citizens will be allowed to vote and must present a picture ID.
14. Eliminate the Federal Reserve. A private banking conglomerate should not have the authority to implement monetary policy for the nation – policy the invariably favors the banks that own said conglomerate.
15. Restore sound money policies by re-establishing the gold standard.
16. Eliminate HFT and dark pools. Combine all equity exchanges into a single system with consistent quotes/pricing.
17. Eliminate “free trade” regulations. Get the federal government out of the business of picking winners and losers.
18. Reinstate Glass Stegall
19. Eliminate the death penalty
20. Eliminate eminent domain
21. Eliminate Citizens United. Corporations are not people.

Great list. We should try it after the collapse. It will give the phoenix a head start.

I have a one point plan to fix this nation.

1. No more federal government. Nothing. All of it gone.

Simplicity!

21. Eliminate Citizens United. Corporations are not people.

You just got rid of every law in the land.

Don't institutionalize the parties, especially the balance of power. Try this instead:

There shall be eight Justices of the Supreme Court. They will be limited to 12 year terms and shall be elected by Congress, four by Democrats the House of Representatives and four by Republicans the Senate. Justices will be subject to impeachment based on a 2/3 majority of Congress.

This is my thinking. The existing system has been gamed, and there is no fixing it short of a miracle. Too many things have been wired to keep the system operating as it is.

I think you might have misposted that to me, PJ.

I don’t want any justices, or Supreme Court or House of Representatives.

There is really only one sure way to fix any of them.

As to #19 ... Expand the scope of it, and limit waiting times to no more than five years.

I suggest we re-instate the anti-Communist laws of the 1950’s.

Let’s start with equality before the law; I like you pointed out Congress should be equally shackled by the laws they assign the people, but expand that. Any exemption to any law given to the federal, state or local governments applies equally to all citizens.

Sunset on all laws: All laws are required to be individually renewed after a report has been made on the effectiveness of the law every 10 years.

I don’t agree with term limits; I think simply eliminating any benefits (AT ALL) for any appointed or elected position would solve most of the issues. They can invest their salaries if they really want a retirement, or pay into social security. Term limits simply means they’ll get a lifetime ride from the taxpayers all that much quicker rather than having to wait until they are fired.

Good list, but I would start with a few things that, if achieved, would take care of much of the rest.

1. Repeal the 17th Amendment.

The Seventeenth Amendment (Amendment XVII) to the United States Constitution established the popular election of United States Senators by the people of the states. The amendment supersedes Article I, §3, Clauses 1 and 2 of the Constitution, under which senators were elected by state legislatures.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seventeenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

This will bring politics back to the local/State level as it was designed.

2. Require a Balanced Budget.

I don’t see how term limits give anyone a lifetime ride on the taxpayer? In fact by limiting terms the opposite will occur. Allowing a professional political class like we have now is definitely a lifetime ride!

20. Eliminate eminent domain

That could potentially be a bad idea. However, eliminating for the sole benefit of a business might be in order.

Also, what is your reasoning for eliminating the death penalty. Has that been a very successful move any where in the world?

A few more:

1. The Congress will no longer be free to set their own salaries and benefits. They will be set based on a percentage of the Federal Government's monetary reserves starting at .000001% of every $100 billion in reserve. Then it must be approved by a vote of the people.

2. All legislation must pass Constitutional muster before becoming law.

3. Any legislator who promotes unconstitutional Federal Government authority shall be removed immediately from office.

4. ALL States must strictly comply with the 10 Amendments to the US Constitution, no deviations will be permitted.

5. All Elected and Appointed DC official must comply 100% with their oath of office or be removed immediately.

6. No DC elected official shall become a lobbyist for a period of 10 years upon vacating their elected office.

I would like to see any new “National monuments” or lands set aside be by a national referendum not merely an “executive declaration.
