From the looks of the countryside around the river, the land isn’t doing a whole lot better.
It’s downstream of a huge sulfate ore (with mercury and arsenic traces plus chromium sulfate) smelter which has created the most polluted acreage in the world by some estimates. I wouldn’t live downstream let alone work there. The Soviets did nothing to mitigate the damages and neither have their successors.
Belatedly it’s the blood of the millions murdered by the communists in that icy hellhole.
I’m surprised to see anything alive and growing within 500ft of the riverbanks.

Whew! For a second there, I thought it was a huge wine spill in the Russian River in California.
That’s some tough undergrowth! I was born in a town with a smelter. The smelter closed in 1972 and the desert has recovered since then pretty completely. Not having SO2 pumped into the air helps. It was a pretty neat looking old plant though. It had had a machine shop that could make most anything as the railroad had steam locomotives and the rest of the mine used equipment that was out of date.
