No. I did not know that.

I’ve figured out that if we used coins for all money worth up to what a silver dollar was worth back in the 60’s, I think the smallest paper denomination would be the $20 bill.

It is truly fascinating just how little money is worth these days.

“it’s otherwise about the money and asset seizures much more so than drug seizures”

Don’t forget it’s also a handy excuse to compromise civil liberties. Used to be a routine traffic stop was just that, you’d get a ticket and be on your way if you didn’t act nutty. Now, the cop can just claim they smelled pot and use it as an excuse to tear apart any vehicle they want without a warrant.

I think they should bring back the $500 bill and the $1000 bill.

Oh, not to end the drug trade, but as an excuse to get much greater control over all money - and to monitor the citizens much better in the process (knowing exactly where, when, and why every transaction occurs between whom).

If cash is gone, how will the end user get their drugs etc.? There’s also a war on gold/silver as evidenced by the big banker shorting that has been going on for the last 4 years.
The black ops (government overthrows, secret accounts for the elites, underground bunkers etc) depends on the dark money form the narco trade and ultimately you need an end-user.
I don’t think that Tide detergent as a medium of exchange is going to do it.

I agree. They certainly are not worth what they used to be.

Well there is no doubt that there have been outrageous abuses over the seizure of cash in traffic stops if the news that we see is accurate. Courts should not be allowing the seizure of cash on suspicion alone and the courts should be forcing the prompt release of the money, it is often the working capital of small businesses. Of course it also isn’t as easy to tax so politicians don’t want you to use it unless you are dropping it off in a shopping bag at their office.

But I did not know it was illegal to have money.

******************

It's not illegal but the acquisition is the question.

“running hard currency across the border in bulk has for years been a favorite method for criminal groups to move illicit earnings from the United States back to Latin America.”

I wonder about money from US citizens. If hitlery gets in or 0bama stays in a lot of people will be interested in getting out of the US.

.
>> “Will the agents be tasked with ensuring the money gets back into circulation?” <<

Yes, of course!

They will use the “commercial” method: putting it into circulation when they buy stuff.

“I’m old. I remember what it was like to be free.”

I dunno if anyone is old enough to remember that...

but I can remember the ‘50s and we were a lot freer in many ways it seems to me.

But the side effect would be to end the drug trade, which I don’t think the government has any interest in doing...

I heard about this on local San Diego news. There were two cars that were intercepted in north San Diego County, about 60 miles north of the border. I wonder how the Border Patrol knew about those two cars. This did not happen on federal port property.

...the acquisition is the question.

Yeah. I find that interesting.

Cop: Where’d you get that money from.
Mr. Douglas: None of your beezwax. It’s mine.
Cop: I think you stole it.
Mr. Douglas: What is your probable cause?
Cop: That’s a lot of money.
Mr. Douglas: I’ve worked for many decades to acquire this money.
Etc.

I agree that huge sums of money is one thing, but 40 or 50 thousand? That’s just not that much money these days. That will buy you a fairly nice car. That’s it. It’s not chump change, and people don’t carry it around in their wallet all the time, but a person who deals in cash will have that much on him every now and then. And in some parts of the country it happens more than others.

The whole thing grates on me. It’s simply none of their business where I got my money. Its mere existence does not suggest a crime has been committed until you get into six figures. At least it shouldn’t. And even then, a case needs to be made and proven.

At least, that is how it would work in a free country.

wardaddy,

Agreed - there was no crime committed here. Having a large amount of cash is not a crime.
