Any Hints on Installing a Soaker Hose Configuration in My Garden?
Soaker Hose Kit I just got | 7/20/16 | Me, Myself, & I

Posted on 07/20/2016 7:35:36 PM PDT by EinNYC

I am tired of having to waste time positioning a sprinkler, turning off the water and moving the sprinkler a little to the left, a little to the right, etc. so that it hits all parts of the garden but does not spray the front of the building. So, I am going to the soaker hose solution. I'll just turn on the water and voila! Garden gets watered.

I just acquired a 100' soaker hose kit to water my garden. It has 20 little T-s, male parts, female parts, and who knows, maybe some transgender parts, too. Haven't looked over the little connector parts that carefully yet. I also picked up a bunch of garden staples to tack the hose to the ground. After I install the system, I will lay down a couple inches of mulch.

Do any FReepers have experience in laying out a soaker hose arrangement in their garden? Are there any special caveats or hints you could share?

Thanks.

Sit down with paper and pencil. You’ll be surprised that 100’ doesn’t go very far.

Buy some plastic pipe, drill holes, glue on a hose fitting to the inlet. Water.

I built a canal system for my garden. It ran up and down the rows. I had the perfect slope and the hose just sat open at one corner. It was a work to behold!!

And I'm a girl.

Gotta be a joke. Anti-Cruz fire needs more than a soaker hose to put it out tonight. Wish I could worry about soaker hoses tonight instead of feeding my political addiction.

Check out back to Eden gardening on YouTube. You won’t need to water.

I stand over my garden with the hose and soak it myself. I know how much each plant needs.

Soaker hose is fragile - develops rips and tears too easily. You’ll be digging it up and replacing parts all the time. As someone earlier suggested I would go with plastic piping and fittings - drill small holes in the pipe and cap the end.

Your canal system sounds awesome. I could not use that here due to the open water aspect (don’t want to attract skeeters). This system is supposed to save 70% on water.

Make sure you install a filter.

I didn’t and the fine sands plugged the hose, and entire day spent installing it wasted, along with a bunch of money.

I have to agree with Fat Guy in LA.

I had a soaker hose. It lasted for a single year and it was junk after that. Went with PEX hose, drilled holes in it and buried it. It’s been in the garden for over four years with never a problem. I never purge it, and it tolerates being frozen with water in it. A one and done solution.

Nope...there is no standing water. I'm not damning water....just creating the path.

Lie down when you're very relaxed. Close your eyes. Envision what you want. Then play girl and grab one of those "really, really smart male neighbors', and let him show you how it's done.

I just happen to have a degree in engineering.
