I love Supertramp & consider them to be very underrated musicians. They were wonderful live.
IMO, their live versions of “Dreamer” and “Another Man’s Woman” are superior to the studio version.
RUSH sounds just as good or better live (depending on the venue) as they do on the recordings. However, the live show is SO exact it sort of misses on what a “live” show is about - a little improv, etc. (The show is spectacular though!)
I can’t stand Jimmy Buffet music on his old studio albums. But his live albums are great!
I saw The Stones, The Who, Skynyrd and McCartney, The Dead and lots of others. There were good shows and bad ones. Normally the best shows had lots of musicians on stage. So when someone like Pete Townsend was windmilling, and breaking strings, there would be someone to keep the song alive.
For some years in the 1980’s especially, there were tapes that would play pre-recorded stuff. But I think I was most impressed with Paul Simon’s band that he has traveled with for the past 20 years. Those guys are all great musicians. Really wonderful everyone.

My father ripped up the tickets to Bowie’s Diamond Dogs tour at the Los Angeles Forum around 1975. Boy, my three older brothers and I were very upset. We went to the Black Sabbath concert at Angel’s Stadium instead. I remember Ozzy Osborn always saying, “I love you, I love you, I love you.” We thought that was odd.

The sound quality alone is amazing, and this was done almost 40 years ago!
I saw The Who? in their prime, I think; right after "Tommy" was added to the live program. I'm not musician enough to judge, but the show I saw was "electric" everybody in the audience realizing they were seeing something revolutionary.
The "disappointing" may have been the result of excessive drug usage during the live performances.

According to Vincent Bugliosi in "Helter Skelter", Charley Manson had nicknamed follower Susan Atkins "Sadie" prior to the release of that song. The coincidence constituted proof to his followers that Charley had a special ethereal relationship with group whom they listened to often.
The reason was that the Beatles were much more technical than the Stones and they really pioneered modern sound engineering and mixing at their Abbey Roads studio
The Beatles also had some really outstanding sound engineers such as Alan Parsons mixing and producing and The Beatles Abby Road studio was the gold standard of recording studios in its day

Grand Funk Railroad paved the way for Jefferson Airplane, which cleared the way for Jefferson Starship. The stage was now set for The Alan Parsons Project, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft.

Interesting thread, I like hearing people’s concert stories of classic rock bands. Though I never saw them live, the recordings and video I’ve heard and seen of the Beatles indicate that they were a great band live, but the whole stadium concernt type of thing was just in its infancy. I did see the Who in 1989 and they didn a great show, with a long encore in which they actually played a Creedence Clearwater Revival song! Also saw Bob Dylan the same year. Great concert and he never spoke. No encore either, they just got in the truck (right behind the outdoor stage) and drove off!
Oops, two corrections: “concert” for “concernt”, and “did” for “didn”. Sorry folks!
