Friday Evening Vanity Thread - "I'm Chuck, I'm a bike-a-holic"

Posted on 07/15/2016 4:45:47 PM PDT by West Texas Chuck

"Hi Chuck"

I have a problem with bicycles. Instead of a 12-step program I had 12 bikes. Some of them are gone now, I'm down to 8.

Please allow me to introduce you to my new Little Friend, the Strangler.

I had this hole in my collection, that is my story and I'm sticking to it :)

I ride all over town, from Garland to Richardson to downtown Dallas and back to Garland. In one day. I ride around White Rock Lake in winter, when it is dark and cold. I got fed up with trying to decide which of my steeds to deploy in these conditions and decided to build a new one. She Who Must Be Obeyed was not amused, I had to give her permission to buy a new sewing machine, plus I get dragged through the yarn aisles of WallyWorld and Michaels, etc, and I can't bitch about it. That's my story ...

Surly "Straggler" I changed the name on. 11-speed Ultegra, disc brakes, 11-32 and 50x34, SPDs, couple of sets of tires on tubless Hope "Pro-4" wheelset. Purty gooder 'un, IMHO. Rode it twice so far, crashed once because I was a dumbass and didn't test the release tension on the SPDs before mounting up. Fell over when I stopped, nobody around to see thankfully :)

I am reinvigorated, ready for whatever now. Roads, bike lanes and paths, even the Trinity River levees or some light trail duty. I got it going on now peeps!

Let's ride.

I’m noticing you have not installed a proper engine.

Well, that’s what I call a benign addiction, so long as you don’t spend the rent, gas or grocery money on nothing but bikes. I’m waiting for a foot to finish healing after ankle surgery (Tendonitis treatment), and soon will be hopefully be walking normally, meaning without limping for the first time since, Oh, I dunno since January of 2012. Lucky you to have the wealth and leg health to do this. Keep on Bikin’, but every so often look around and smell the tires!

Done a little on a bike myself, over 25,000 miles.

Purty sweet! Althought I prefer recumbents (aka peddling a lazyboy) to those ass-hatchets, I do have a high tolerance level for others tastes, and I see you have some decent gearing and rubber there to help out when the goin’ gets a little tough.

And if you fall off a bike and no one sees it, you didn’t fall off!

I bike ride every day. 10, 20, 30 miles. Let me know if you have a bike for sale: road bike, 52 cm, under $500.

Presently I am cycling on a very cool K2 Mach 1 bicycle from 2005 with Shimano 105. The bike is totally sweet especially on downhills and yes, I am ready for an upgrade.

Very nice. I bought a road bike in 2008 when my brother convinced me to ride Ragbrai with him. I’ve ridden ever since, not huge miles, maybe 1500 to 2000 a year, but enough to keep the fat at bay.

The one I own has carbon stays and fork, I’ve been limited when it comes to touring with it. I changed out to a metal seatpost and have put a rack on that, but I can’t really put more than 20 pounds on it before it gets unstable. I do wish I had a Surly Long Haul Trucker so I could do some touring. Maybe someone will give me one!

Get a Specialized Roubaix Pro with Shimano Ultegra Di2 Disc. You will never have to buy another bike. Just don’t crash it too bad (like hitting a car that turned left in front of you at 30mph) and don’t lose your receipt.

Falling over is not a crash. It can be embarrassing though...

Some of them are gone now, I'm down to 8.

I have less than half your addiction - a Trek Tourer, Bike Friday and a Brompton. A good bike for almost every condition and travel scenario.

I want one of those bikes with the really fat tires.

But I don’t know why.
