Confirmed: Only Microsoft Edge will play Netflix content at 1080p on your PC

Microsoft's bold claims about Edge turn out to be true.

If you want to watch true 1080p content on Netflix over your PC, you need to use Microsoft’s Edge browser.

On Wednesday, Microsoft claimed that its Edge browser was the only one of the big four browsers—which also includes Chrome, Firefox, and Opera—to offer 1080p resolution while playing Netflix content. A quick test of all four browsers by PCWorld proved this claim to be true, with the other three browsers capped at 720p.

Why this matters: Microsoft’s been busy trying to rehabilitate the reputation of Edge, which suffered after the browser initially offered slower performance than its competitors, while also lacking the plugins and extensions that other browsers, particularly Firefox, have offered for years. Performance in Edge has since improved, and it has began offering a few plugins for public use. These are important steps for Microsoft if Edge is to avoid the fate of Internet Explorer, which became known as the browser users loved to hate.

Windows 10 Edge browser does 1090p like no one else... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

That's real odd. I haven't had any trouble with it... are you sure the upgrade was error-message-free?

Do not GAS, never play movies on the PC, never will.

Whatever happened to PCs being tools?

When I click on EDGE, I get the message...”Well, we can’t seem to get there from here.” Then I get messages to restart, reload, check my url. I got tired of it and just use my Mozilla which still works just fine.

Also, when I start up Windows 10, it can’t decide if I am in America or Denmark.

Sometimes you have no choice. As a SalesForce developer, I am FORCED to use Edge because SalesForce apparently has a penchant for using Edge-specific features in their developer's UI.

Shades of the 90's when Microsoft encouraged developers to use Internet Explorer specific features, to lock them in.

Now they’re toys.

I bought an iPad 2 when they came out.

To this day, I have no idea what I’m supposed to do with it.

So far, I’ve read a few books, surfed a bit and took it along to see Google maps easier in the car.

Meh.

I have a 5 year old Apple that plays 1080p streaming (but I use Safari or Chrome).

I - and a lot of others - still use Windows 7 + IE11 - Can’t wtach videos on Twitter ( browser doesn’t support ) and MS does nothing . A million complaints on their support site and nothing . Definitely switching - reluctantly I might add - to Apple next time I buy a computer .

Based in Netflix’s own FAQ this is their choice, not MS’. See a lot of MS bashing, or, I’m switching to Apple, in this thread, which is uncalled for. I can watch 1080p videos just fine in IE7-10, Chrome, or Firefox, on my Windows XP, 7, or 10 machines. Have been doing it for years.
