A blast in Central Park severed the foot of a young man visiting New York from northern Virginia Sunday, witnesses said. The NYPD’s bomb squad was investigating the area of the park near E. 68th St. and Fifth Ave. Witnesses said the victim stepped on a device or fireworks, causing the blast. His foot was “all but gone,” one witness told the Daily News. Two of the victim's shocked friends described the ghastly sight moments before being taken away in an ambulance. "We don't know what happened. There was a small explosion and then dust," said one friend who didn't give his name. "We really don't know."

He asked the group if they were carrying fireworks or something similar. “They said, ‘We didn't have anything. He stepped on something!" Murphy recalled.

Fireworks don’t typically go off when you step on them.

This was some form of pressure triggered explosive.

unless the people who had it lit it and ran so fast they weren’t seen, I don’t see how stepping on fireworks makes them go off. unless you have a lighter attached to your foot

There is a short video showing the EMTs heading to the downed hiker. It looks to be in the middle of a well worn trail, not hidden in a wooded area.

That's my take, too.

This is why I quit geocaching a few years back. A shame to ruin a fun activity.

Good thing the NYPD and FBI were prohibited from surveillance in and around the mosks!

4th tomorrow suggest that he, or his friend, was lighting fireworks unsafely. I’ve watched people throw m80s, and bigger, at each other’s feet.

Surprised how little news other than what MSN/NY Daily News story had on this... How quickly this is disappearing down the rabbit hole.

So do you think in this part:

He asked the group if they were carrying fireworks or something similar. “They said, ‘We didn't have anything. He stepped on something!" Murphy recalled.

They were lying?

I mean it's possible, but wouldn't the police have said that it was--or they think it was--a firework? One thing they hate is to have the public go off half-cocked. Especially New York police.

M80s won’t sever a leg- fingers yes but a leg has a lot more mass

I wouldn’t know but I’m not taking the chance. It’d be too easy for some sicko. I do know that some parks cracked down years ago about where they could be place and what type container because muggles were getting scared.

I found the original story at this site.....

http://www.breakingnews.com/

every so often news hits that site that media doesn’t show us.

DailyMail used to be that way....Of late they haven’t been posting the bombings.
