Lowry bogies. Nerves, gentelmen.
Damn, the nerves are setting in. Furyk looking better and better.
Furyk can only watch and wait.
Watched it when it happens. Watched the reply. Johnson took a couple of practice strokes, set up, put his club behind the ball. The ball moved. Maybe one twentieth of a rotation. Looked like the wind. Johnson stopped and called in the official. No stroke assessed, in my opinion. If I understand the rule. Which can be confusing.
Lowry drops another.
Scott Piercy had his chance.

I think that Johnson wins. Even if they give him another sroke.
If we applied the rules/laws of our Republic, like golf referees, apply golf laws...we wouldn’t be in so much trouble.
I think we have a new U.S. Open champion. Dustin Johnson.
Johnson was penalized a stroke. A moot point.

God bless Wayne Gretzky, his super model wife and short, tight white dresses.
Congrats to him!
Has he kicked his cocaine problem?
No argument here.
It was on 5, I believe. Of course, those of us watching witnessed the whole hubbub, including the appearance of a rather harried looking rules official in the announcers' booth trying to explain the inexplicable. It seemed the announcers and players such as Spieth, McIlroy, and Fowler ( via Tweets ) were unanimous in their barely suppressed outrage at the way this was being handled.
In the past, the penalty would have been automatic, and of course Lowry had the same thing happen, but felt that he had caused the ball to move by grounding his putter. DJ did touch the ground, but only off to the side, and I'm sure that he honestly felt he did not cause the very slight movement of the ball.
My own opinion is that these movements were due to the very close cut of the greens, which we could see offered very little rolling resistance to balls moving at the slowest speeds. I've always felt that this celebration of superfast greens was wrongheaded. One of the announcers repeated Nicklaus's statement that they seem faster every time, and opined that this would inevitably reach a "point of no return." Perhaps that's what we were witnessing.
Well, as much as they were fretting over the stress this would cause DJ and the other players, I think it had a salubrious effect on DJ, who seemed steeled in his determination, and played the closing holes to near perfection, including an impressive birdie on 18 to seal his victory.
So, all's right with the world at this hour.
Nice summary.
Is DJ the Mr. Bad guy as people here have portrayed?
Thanks for the ping. (I just got home from working all day saw the ping and checked ESPN online)
HOORAY Dustin Johnson
In 2014 he had an enforced "time out" from the PGA allowing him not to be officially sanctioned for cocaine use. It seems all has been forgiven with his return, and nobody speaks of it. I had actually forgotten all about it!
In the final holes today he was a huge crowd favorite complete with resounding chants of "DJ! DJ!". He was certainly sucking the oxygen from Shane Lowry in the final group, which might have been on a Sunday outing for all the attention they were getting.
