Authorities call on Chilili residents to evacuate as Dog Head Fire triples in size (NM)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | June 15, 2016 | Katy Barnitz

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office says it will begin a mandatory evacuation of Chilili residents as the Dog Head Fire, which reportedly tripled in size Wednesday, moves their way.

The county posted the announcement on social media around 7:30 p.m. The county also said N.M. 337 is closed at N.M. 217 because of the evacuation.

“It’s very very close to the town itself,” Forest Service spokeswoman Arlene Perea said. “It’s knocking at the door.”

The fire broke out Tuesday morning in a section of National Forest land in the Manzano Mountains near Tajique. It remains uncontained. Perea said Wednesday afternoon that the fire was headed toward Chilili and evacuations were not ordered, but they were encouraged.

“It’s voluntary, but strongly suggested,” she said. “The fire has made a big push in that direction.”

A spokesman for the Governor’s office said Wednesday night that Gov. Susana Martinez planned to declare a state of emergency and placed the National Guard on standby. Martinez is also expected to attend the community meeting in Torreon.

Five ranchers went into the fire's path earlier today to rescue their cattle. As of 6 p.m. they hadn't been found or heard from.

Tijeras Slim lives in this area; hope he isn't affected

Forest Service paid liar comes up with a genius statement: “It’s knocking at the door.”

I have friends in that area—At least two lost homes in the fire a few years back. This looks to be a little North of where they all are.

Prayers for them and Tijeras Slim—though if he’s in Tijeras, he’s a long way from the fire.

Slim is south of Tijeras off of NM-337 (old south 14) but I don’t know whether he’s north or south of the intersection with NM 217.

I’m near the old Ponderosa restaurant, my guess is that the fire is about 7 miles south of me. With the prevailing winds, the track may go south and east of me. If not, I’ll have plenty of warning.

Stay safe!

We got lightning and rain here in the oil patch. Headed for the field to work with temps 103+. Ugh!

Stay safe. With our winds, that sucker could turn and be on you faster than Obama can spread the B.S.

It’s been moving east and slightly north, unless it goes directly north at this point it should pass us by with a few miles to spare. Also, moving east gets it out of the forest and onto the plains, easier terrain and loads less fuel.

My folks live in Idaho. They had a very bad range fire (Soda Fire) there last year with scrub. Took over 2 weeks to control. Burned 284,000 acres of rangeland, killed cattle and destroyed property. It can travel very fast on open range with little wind. Glad you're safe.

The fire is relatively close to Mountainair, NM, which was alocale in one of Matt Bracken’s novels, where the “Brown Power” folks would apply spray paint to all the driveways of the Anglos so as to make it easier to disenfranchise them of their property at a later date.
