This Omani Village Has just a 3.5-Hour Day
Tuesday, June 07, 2016

Sun rises at 11am and sets at 2:30pm

A remote Omani village located nearly 2,000 metres above sea level has one of the shortest days in the world, not exceeding 3.5 hours.

Newspapers in Oman and other Gulf countries said the sun rises in Wekan around 11am and sets about 2.30pm.

The village, accessible by donkeys, horses and four-wheel vehicles, is situated in the Northern Al-Batinah province, nearly 150km from the capital Muscat.

The Saudi daily ‘Ajel’ said the village has one of the shortest fasting times in the world but it was not clear whether the Wekanians follow that time in fasting.

Can’t see the pictures, but maybe they are at the bottom of a steep canyon?

The pictures do seem like they may be around steep walls.

Oman is in the Tropical Zone which should mean that their shortest day of the year (potential daylight-wise),in late December, should be something like 9 1/2 hours.

Google Earth reveals that it is bordered very closely by 3000’ cliffs to the west, south and east.

The mohammedans probably define sunrise and sunset by the actual visibility of the sun at a particular location.

It’s got palm trees and lush green stuff which probably has to be watered from a well. I think it’s in Pakistan. It doesn’t make sense unless it is north of the Arctic circle and it can’t be that.

In Colorado Springs the sun goes down everyday at 4. I mean, it’s not night - but the direct sunlight is blocked by the mountains.

Winter or summer. 4pm you’re out of the direct sunlight. I liked that.

Ramadan fasting is defined by sunrise and sunset at the local horizon.

So when the local horizon is 3000’ above your head, Ramalamadingdong fasting doesn’t last very long.

The mohammedans probably define sunrise and sunset by the actual visibility of the sun at a particular location.

That must be the reason.

The village is surrounded by mountains, that must block the sun in the early morning, and again in the afternoon.

The rest of their day must be twilight. -Tom

It looks like it’s on the side of a mountain, wouldn’t that only block the AM or PM sun?

The mountains rise on 3 sides: West, South, North. Check it out on Google Earth ... that’s some really rugged terrain, there.

It could be that on one side the sun is block by other mountains and on the other, it is blocked by the mountainside mountain it is located on. -tom

Where the sun comes up about ten in the morning
And the sun goes down about three in the day

And you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking
And you spend your life digging coal from the bottom of your grave

You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive
