A lovely voice. A poignant song.

This is so spooky. My mother, who is 83 and NEVER listens to anything past 1950, saw the Carpenters on TV the other night and love their songs.

Aren’t they a soft rock band? I have to look up their hits.

At the time, their genre was probably classified as "adult contemporary." They had a string of hits from 1970-1978.

You’re right. I looked up the hits and STILL cant believe my mother liked them.

I LOVE those hits, but was shocked she did.

Good for her!!

My dad, God rest his soul, HATED rock and The Beatles mostly.

Dean and Frank were his guys :)

The Carpenters were a brother and sister act from Southern California. Richard the eldest, was an excellent pianist, but any session player could substitute. Karen sang as a way to compete with Richard.

When they auditioned and offered a contract, Richard thought it was about him and was quickly informed that it was Karen they were offering the contract to.

Or something like that.

Seldom is a low key vocal like Karen Carpenter, as soulful. She is missed.

She probably liked the Carpenters because they were musically talented and their songs were melodious.

I saw a special on them, must have been a few months back. I thought that they were "all Karen" but I learned that Richard arranged most of their music and he was very talented in his own right....I had no idea.
So sad that she saw herself so much different than others saw her. The day she died, if I am not mistaken, Richard saw her for the first time in awhile and he was shocked at how little she weighed. Really too bad...she had such a beautiful voice and she delivered a song like no one else.

I saw that same show. They are both amazingly talented. She saw herself more as a drummer than a singer, yet had one of the most instantly recognizable voices ever.

They were both a wonderful act, but her voice was the horse that pulled the wagon.

A voice of butterscotch.

I can’t listen anymore though. I wish she’d eaten some.

I just never really felt that whole easy listening pop thing ... her voice is a little thin compared to the female singers I favor, both in the jazz and rock worlds.

My opinion only.
