It is so entirely obvious a French candidacy would be simply to give a name on the ballot for the anti Trumps to vote for, and give the election to Hillary.

Ha ha, it’s the David French that no one outside of NR has ever heard of! What an intimidating prospect for the Trump campaign.
Taki’s timeline doesn’t match up with what I can find but I guess it’s a moot point either way. Buckley is dead and Lowry and Goldberg have run things even further into the ground.

GWB and Obama were the coups de grace. They leveraged the exigiencies of their respective times to give the ruling class the powers it had wanted for years. The people weren’t ready until _____ (Obamacare, Patriot Act, NCLB, gay marriage, etc) became “an idea whose time had come”.
