That is the most fecking awesome story, and I’ll bet it’s even true. When you try to right that in a novel, you can’t, because it’s too unbelievable, which is exactly why I believe it’s true. All the best true stories are so far beyond fiction. Thank you.
Or, you can try to right it in a story. Either way, you’re write.
It was a great tool for it’s niche, and you could also use it as a hammer and zodiac anchor, and also as a rock climbing wedge. How many firearms can do all of that?
I have no doubt that the story is true. My friend, now passed, was utterly reliable, and his wife was present when he told me the story and she added that she first heard it soon after it happened. Moreover, most other times when my friend told me something that did not seem at all likely, I later had confirmation independently or through events.
I remember the first time I saw one at the range, the shooter inserted the magazine, cycled the action and the mag. floorplate, spring, follower and rounds promptly fell out of the weapon. I walked away laughing.

Tis true...... very true.
Moisin-Nagant?
I work in law enforcement, and it’s true. The really true stuff is sometimes so “out there” that you try to tell people about it and they call BS on you.

Hemingway destroyed a toilet in The Ritz with an MP-38. Buck Lanham gave him a pair of them and he was setting up wine bottles in the fireplace for a little demonstration when his wife put her foot down. He petulantly marched off to the bathroom, and, well....what’s a guy to do?
Let me guess, lack of sobriety was involved.
Well, it was Hemingway. Probably he was more upset at being scolded by the wife. He had a colorful history at The Ritz. A skylight once broke and cut his head. The young doctor that sewed him up later went on to shoot Huey Long.
