Looks to me like we just happen to be in the right place relative to this star, so we’re just about exactly perpendicular to the star’s poles. The “rectangle” is two cones of matter being blown off the poles of the star. The diagonal lines are just the walls of the two cones, which are tenuous enough that they only seem thick at the point where we’re looking at the edges of the cone.

Bingo. The order Amid what should be Chaos, I can only attribute to a planned design. A baffling one, to be sure, but obviously designed nevertheless.
