Good Evening, everybody!

Here is tonight's Classical foray into fantasy to get opur minds off politics for a few minutes.

Before You Tube, it was nearly impossible to find the full version of The Polovetsian Dances, with the singing, the dancing, the costumes, and the fun.

Here You Go!

Just got back from a 3-day Schubertiade in Vancouver (BC). Thanks for posting.

It actually started last Sunday at a lieder concert at the University of British Columbia. The first half was the Schumann and Brahms settings of Heine, and the second half was the Schubert and Wolf settings of Goethe.

Then we had three days at the Vancouver Playhouse of the works of Schubert's final year, featuring the last three piano sonatas, the last two fantasies, the string quintet (best performance ever!), and then the 14 last songs. Outstanding performances and I had a great seat, just four rows from the action.

Got back this morning.

I once did a field recording of an excellent Bluegrass band in FL. I schlepped all my equipment to the band’s rehearsal space, wired everyone up and recorded it live in one take (five songs). They ended up using it for their demo.

I like all genres of music, except rap. If it doesn’t have melody, it leaves me cold.

A couple of years back PBS carried the latest Met production of "Prince Igor", a semi-surrealistic effort conducted by Gianandrea Noseda and mixing live stage action and music with black/white movies to tell the story of the Prince's battle with the Polovtsians to save the Russian people. The Dances were actually set in a field of 50 thousand red poppies (artificial of course) after the Prince had been captured - his captor is trying to persuade him to join forces with the Polovtsians and sends his dancers for entertainment, but Igor's guilt and desolation after the defeat of his army is distracting and the poppies suggest the whole sequence is some sort of beautiful drug-induced dream. The production doesn't seem to be available online, but this little snippet will give an idea of how the dances went - Met Polovtsian Dances. Sort of over the top, but I caught three or four replays during the week it was shown on various PBS outlets in the area just so I could dream along with the Prince again for awhile.....
