The GOP Has Two Fevers That Need to Break
Real Clear Poltics ^ | April 12, 2016 | Michael Gerson

Posted on 04/13/2016 2:41:41 PM PDT by CapitalistCrusader

WASHINGTON -- Some Trump-obsessed, hysterical nitwits have overstated the case that the Republican Party may be on the verge of self-annihilation. "If Trump were the nominee," said one, "the GOP would cease to be." That quote would be mine. The mood of the moment (not to mention the rhythm of the sentence) was irresistible. But the Republican Party would probably not disintegrate if either Donald Trump or Ted Cruz were its nominee. The reality is both less dramatic and (for those who wish the GOP well) more tragic.

What Mr. Gerson fails to realize is that the GOP did this to themselves. They either misread or ignored the lessons from the 2010, 2012 and 2014 cycles. If they had recognized those lessons they would have united behind the clear front-runner and been in a much more powerful position going into the general.

Bottom line:

The GOPe doesn’t care if the republicans win or the democrats as long as they keep their cushy lives the way they are today...They will go on as they have for the last 25 years...Being blowhard political speech makers and doing little else...They will accept Cruz because after the last several weeks, he has become beholden to them and with him and they know he probably can’t beat Hillary... It will be “politics as usual”...

Count on it...

I am getting the sickening feeling that everyone in here, BOTH Trump and Cruz supporters, along with the common, everyday American, is being played like a fiddle by the “establishment elites” who will decide who runs against Hillary and loses...

I think they are sitting back and laughing at all of us....

“The Republican Party,” they conclude, “is stronger than it has been in most of our readers’ lifetimes.”

LOL.

And yet the democrat agenda continues like a juggernaut.

This author is complete twit with his head up his a$$.

I guess it depends on what the meaning of the words “Republican Party” are . . .

If the Republican Party is, the party of the Republic, created to secure the blessings of Liberty and our G-d given natural rights, the party of limited government and fiscal conservatism, the party of Peace through Quiet Strength and an invested and involved citizenry, then yes, to our tragic loss, that blessed creation has passed on.

If you mean the Republican Party of Boehner-Ryan-Romney-McCain-Graham-Rubio AND OBAMA et al, then Yaaaaa Hoooo! that Grizzled painted bitch is alive and working that stankin’ bloody gash all over this fruited plain.

Is the Party the Voters or them’s-that-count-dem-votes?

That existential decision is what we face today.

The GOP is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Cheap Labor Express.

They exist to block the citizens from doing anything about the invasion of our country.

They know exactly what they are doing. They are thwarting the will of their constituents.

I am hoping if Trump can get the nomination he can change the party into something useful.

Nick, I really don't think you can blame Trump on the Republicans. Certainly, the Trumpists wouldn't give the party credit for him...

The second fever is less common in the U.S. than in Europe, but it is a particularly vicious strain. This is the claim by right-wing populists that Republicans need to completely reorient their ideology in favor of nativism, protectionism and isolationism in order to appeal to working-class whites.

The usual globalist elite disparagement of nationalism. Nobody is calling for isolationism. Protecting our economy from unfair trade when we have trillion dollar deficits is common sense. Stopping our nation from being overrun by illegal aliens is self-preservation, not nativism. And that in a nutshell is what has the GOP's panties in a bunch and why they are as much a threat to our survival as the Democrats.

Gerson seems to have all his facts in order. Problem is they just don't lead him to the correct conclusions. Here's where he goes off the tracks...

The problem? Aside from the fact that protectionism is self-destructive economic policy, and isolationism is disastrous foreign policy, an attempt to pump up the white vote with nativist rhetoric manages to alienate just about everyone else. Trump has secured his stagnant plurality in GOP primaries by earning record-level disapproval from the rest of America. If Trump were the Republican nominee, winning states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan would require an increase in the white working-class vote so vast that the math is essentially impossible.

First, while protectionism is self-destructive, the true objective is to re-patriate well-paying jobs (or avoid their expatriation). And there are other, better ways to accomplish that objective. E.g., a better regulatory environment (bye-bye EPA) and lower corporate taxes (now highest in the advanced world), coupled with a hefty capital boost via facilitated re-patriation of foreign income without penalty (a $5 trillion shot-in-the-arm). We could do a better job negotiating trade deals, too, but the impact of doing so would be but a fraction of the benefits obtained by cleaning our own financial house.

Of course, isolationism is a disastrous foreign policy. America has legitimate interests around the world...as well as legitimate obligations. The issue hinges on proper judgment of what is legitimate...and what ain't.

Example: ISIS is de-stabilizing an area that the civilized world is dependent upon, not to mention setting a bad example for the Islamic world. They should be annihilated. Quickly...at lowest possible cost...and made an exammple of (napalm optional).

Example: Syrias's Bashar Assad is a brutal bastard. So long as he keeps his appetites in check and pays his bills, what do we care?

Example: An enormous percentage of world trade (including our own) traverses the South China Sea. Friction between the ChiComs and the Free World is inevitable. It's vital that we remain strong enough to effectively project power into the area and keep the ChiComms at bay. At the same time, there is no need to provoke.

Finally, nativism is a mis-applied pejorative. It's not about "pumping up the white vote", Gerson, you dumbass! It's primarily about preserving the culture from illegal alien infiltration. And it's secondarily about preserving jobs and wages for native Americans (including Indians) -- particularly in a time that is referred to as The Great Recession.

So long as the Washington elite misunderstand -- or don't recognize -- the problems, they can't possibly be trusted to prescribe any solutions. That includes you, Michael Gerson.

They are intentionally thwarting the will of the people.

Gerson is paid to provide propaganda cover for the The Cheap Labor Express.

They are importing the workers for the jobs that cannot be exported.

I've suspected this for much of the last two decades. This campaign is the first time the veil has been lifted and the real OZ is revealed. The scab has been scratched off and the open wound is ugly.

I'm 68 and doubt that I will vote with the GOP in the future. I will switch to independent and ponder my next move. I hate the liberals for screwing our country up, so I would never support the Marxist Left. So I am a future disenfranchised Republican voter.

I don't like being laughed at.

“They gave us McCain. Then they gave us Romney. 8f [sic] they give us Trump, then conservatives should realize it’s time to move on.”

I profoundly disagree: If they give us (rather, concede us) Trump, it may or may not be time to move on; if they give us Cruz, it will most definitely be time to move on.
Cruz is a Harvard lawyer, a professional politician, a dedicated globalist, and, to top it all off, is constitutionally ineligible (yeah, he is, no matter what sophistry the likes of shysters like Mark Levin shill out).
Trump MAY betray us; Cruz WILL betray us (and already has).
