Yep.

The people who say "love is not enough" need to read 1 Corinthians 13 to understand what love is.

It is enough.

But it is occasionally a heck of a lot of work :)

I’ve heard it phrased like this, the purpose of marriage isn’t to make us happy. Rather it’s to make us holy.

That statement comes from the book Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas, which is one of the best books on marriage there is.

I agree with it as being ONE of the purposes of marriage, but it is NOT the main purpose.

The MAIN PURPOSE of marriage is to glorify God - to be a picture and representation of Who He is......to exemplify on earth His love, and that “greater love hath no man than this - that he lay down his life for another.” Love without the cross is not the ultimate love. The MAIN purpose of marriage is NOT FOR US - it is for HIM.

Of course, at the same time, it is very much for us - but that is secondary to His prime purpose. (Note: the Bible does not speak of God’s “purposes” [plural - found only once], but of His “purpose”, singular.) Yes, making us holy is part of that purpose, but I think putting it that his purpose as it relates to us is to conform us to His image is a more comprehensive way to put it.

I explained this in a book I wrote for young Christians some 23 years ago which is now out of print. If anyone wants to read it, it is online - I’ll not promote it here, but if you want to read it, PM me and I’ll PM you the link.
