In the critical early days of September 2008, after Sarah Palin was nominated as the Republican Party's candidate for Vice President, the National Enquirer ran a cover story alleging that the Alaska governor had an adulterous affair.
Palin, and Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign, immediately and unequivocally denied the story. "The smearing of the Palin family must end," said McCain campaign manager Steve Schmidt, as quoted at the time. "The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie. The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it." The campaign also threatened legal action.
(That was a textbook example of how to shut down a media rumor)

Why bother, the Cruz affair allegations have effectively been shut down as a backfire joke going against Trump because not one single thread of evidence could be thrown in the light. It was all “insider reports from someone in the camp close to”... blah blah blah. Trying to build a story on top of crumbling thin air is like trying to build multistory sand castle without water to hold anything together.
It will blow over and all the voting pubic will remember is someone who plays dirty planted a rotten seed.
I’m not commenting on Cruz.
I am just commenting on Palin. She shut down the rumor quickly, and effectively.
Palin did.
Cruz’s horrendous guilty-looking conduct when asked directly to deny he has affairs and Carly jumping in to save him is an optic that too many saw.
Better men have been destroyed with less.
All Cruz is doing now is dragging out the Primary to harm Trump. As a Lawyer who wrapped himself in the Bible as a foundation of his campaign, He a dead man - politically - walking.
I’ve been referencing those 2008 stories to the frenzy feeders all week, but the usual response is *crickets*.
But the greater point is the Enquirer is full of crap.
Cruz categorically denied the affairs, but personally I hope Trumpetts keep playing the story up, it backfired on them to most voters. Trump is is own worse enemy. Best thing for Cruz is for Trump to keep a keyboard and Twitter account going.
Palin is the how to do it manual.
Cruz is the how not to do it manual.
And, of course, the anti-Trumpsters find in this story another excuse to trash and blame Trump for something he did not do. Trump was not involved with this story, and it really is up to Cruz to quash it. Which he has not done.

Cruz has denied this smear from the start. Read something besides “conservative treehouse.”

That’s the takeaway. She threatened to sue so the NE had to put up or shut up. What has Cruz done? Threatened to sue a Twitter hashtag, but not the NE. Hmmm...
Like I said, Cruz has got more mileage out of the garbage out of Trump's camp this week than perhaps the 10 week previous. Keep pushing the story, please. Just when folks ask for proof, remember thin air doesn't sell like it used to.

But will Cruz supporters note his recent pandering to the Pro-abortion crowd and other similar lapses in his "rock-solid-conservative" meme"??? Is it OK for him to go against his "principles" as long as he can leverage something against Trump (who is being attacked by Cruz for espousing the same principles Cruz claims when he's not trying to say they're bad things when espoused by Trump?
C'mon - a little honesty can go a long way....
The America voters with brains see this as a disgusting sleazy stunt and clearly see who was behind it. Only KoolAid drinking gullible idiots actually believe the smear.
Indy voters hate smear merchants. This NE story is going to boomarang back on Trump like a 1000 lb. blob of hot streaming sh__. Just wait till more of the Stone-Pecker henchman element starts leaking onto the story. IF an when this happens the unraveling will begin in earnest.
