Pedestrian deaths surged in 2015, early data suggests

Pedestrian deaths surged by an estimated 10 percent last year as the economy improved, the price of gas plunged and motorists put more miles behind the wheel than ever before, according to an analysis of preliminary state traffic fatality data.

The growing use of cellphones distracting drivers and walkers may also be partially to blame, states a report released by the Governors Highway Safety Association, which represents governors’ highway safety offices. Warmer weather and shorter winters along with a greater awareness of health benefits may also be encouraging people to walk more. […]

The data analyzed were from the first half of 2015. If the trend holds true for the full year, it would be the largest year-to-year increase in pedestrian deaths since 1975 when the current federal system for recording traffic deaths was created. …

This combination (President & Congress) also makes me think about walking into traffic on occasion.

Funny, pedestrian deaths near me went up due to more illegals driving and crossing streets illegally in front of traffic.

“...as the economy improved...”

What a load of crap.

Rather, it’s more like that as the real economic reality hit hard pressed unemployed Americans, they took jumping in front of cars because they either couldn’t afford to purchase a gun or were prevented fom doing so because of the draconian and un-Constitional firearm laws the Dems have put in place.

But not sure to worry because a speeding car is every bit as lethal as a so wrong bullet.

Besides that, if the gubmint makes a person’s life imtolerable, then it is that person’s G*d given right to end it as he/she/it sees fit.

JMHO.

If you saw the white liberal idiots talking on cell phones and texting while crossing the streets in DC, you’d know why pedestrian deaths are up.

I nearly clobbered a jogger in my neighborhood when I was turning left on a green light and he ran straight at my car eventhough I was basically through the turn. He had ear plugs in for a radio and he yelled at us.

Schmuck never even looked at our 4,000 lb car in the turning lane.

Another cause of pedestrian deaths are hoodies, esp. by blacks and Hispanics in the DC area. They cross streets with almost no sideways vision and almost never look both ways even if they are wearing a hoodie.

Stupidity does kill. A real tragedy that common sense could prevent, but commonsense has been outlawed in both the government, young libs and street kids.

The growing use of cellphones distracting drivers and walkers may also be partially to blame

I watched a guy in Alexander North Dakota walking through a vacant lot trip in a hole and fall flat. He was doing something with a phone with both hands. When drivers are distracted, it doesn't help (almost every driver I have seen in the last three years doing some stupid maneuver has had a phone in hand), but pedestrians get so wrapped up in whatever they are doing they lose track of their surroundings, too.

Cell phones certainly are playing a huge part in these deaths. People are focused straight down as they walk, peripheral vision hugely compromised, as are their minds. Last night a female college student focused on her hand-held phone walked across a condominium complex driveway entrance as if it did not exist. To her it was just a continuation of the sidewalk. She did not notice that my car was approaching the end of the drive-way and would have crossed her path, had I not seen her marching across, not missing a beat, oblivious to her surroundings. Had she just been walking without the phone as focus, there is no way she would not have realized she was walking across a driveway with cars coming and going. l

I see, it’s the fault of the drivers that pedestrians aren’t paying attention and keep walking in front of moving cars...

“The growing use of cellphones distracting drivers and walkers may also be partially to blame...”

The other day I was driving and noticed a gal walking and looking at her cell phone. Then I noticed she was walking with a gal using one of those canes for the blind. THEN I noticed that the blind gal had a phone up to her ear!

Talk about the blind leading the blind!

From what I saw this morning, I’m not surprised. Narrow two lane road heavy traffic. Jogger ignoring the sidewalk and running about 4 feet out in the traffic lane - not even on the shoulder area. Cars slamming on their brakes to avoid hitting him - waiting until the traffic cleared in the other direction to get around him because that a**hole wasn’t moving out of the road. Now no one wants to run over anyone, but if someone got out of their car and punched him out I wouldn’t be surprised.

Yea, cute how they blame more people driving due to low fuel prices - if the that were the case, then less people would be walking, and thus less pedistrans should be killed.

It’s like how they blame the very high accident rate in Florida on the boring, monotonous, flat roads. As if the geezers, whose reflexes and eyesight are worse than most legally drunk drivers, have nothing to do with it.

Is it just that? I’ve hearing of more and more pedestrian accidents where the drivers were of Hispanic origin... just saying...

I watched a guy make three attempts to back out of a parking space in a parking lot...finally, on the 4th try he got it. He just couldn’t put the phone down (had it in one hand the whole time).
