A political lesson for Trump: when the media hate you, NOTHING is “off the record”.

If it was “off the record”, why are there audio recordings and a transcript of this portion of the meeting?

The most optimistic analysis of Trump as a presidential candidate is that he just doesn’t believe in positions, except the ones you adopt for strategic purposes when you’re making a deal.

Trump's worshippers are fully aware of that. That's how they explain away his all-over-the-map policy positioning over the years.

The more I see of Trump, the more I hear about Trump, the more I might sit out this election if Trump gets the nomination. Or go 3rd party.

Of course, I am not excited about my other primary choices at this point, either.

give candidates a chance to make their pitch for the paper’s endorsement.

Really?

Would Trump make a pitch for an endorsement from the NYT?

This smells...

Why would any Republican candidate want to get the NY Times endorsement?

This is sleazier than the sleazy games played by Harry Reid and Mitt Romney.

The most optimistic analysis of Trump as a presidential candidate is that he just doesn’t believe in positions, except the ones you adopt for strategic purposes when you’re making a deal. So you obviously can’t explain how you’re going to deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, because it’s going to be the first bid in some future monster negotiation session.

This BuzzFeed character takes that second sentence from a paragraph in a Gail Collins column and launches into world class speculation and rumor-mongering. Then he gets some sleazy NY Times officials to play along, saying they can't release anything without Trump's permission.

Trump should ignore them all.

Much speculation here. Release the transcripts.

From the story:

"I wasn’t able to obtain the recording, or the transcript, and don’t know exactly what Trump said. Neither Baquet, Collins, nor various editorial board members I reached would comment on an off-the-record conversation, which the Times essentially said they cannot release without approval from Trump, given the nature of the off-the-record agreement."

So what part of "cannot release without approval from Trump" is unclear to you?

I wonder if there are legal implications when a newspaper conducts “off the record” conversations, and then participates in a sleazy political game like this. Someone at the Times breached that confidentiality agreement and help set this game in motion.

Could it be any worse than what he already told Fox and Friends in 2012, in a video still viewable on Fox’s web site?

Expecting a flip-flopper to not flip flop back again is like expecting a cheating spouse to not cheat again.

Trump: Well, it’s a very complicated subject and you don’t just play it one way, but for people that have been here for years that have, y’know, been hard workers, have good jobs, are supporting a family, it’s very, very tough to just say, by the way, y’know, 22 years, you’re getting, you have to leave, get out!

I’m one of the world’s very conservative people but I have to tell you, on a human basis, how do you throw somebody out that’s lived in this country for 20 years?

And we also have to have a solution with compassion. We have to show some compassion. We just can’t throw everybody out.

Off the record interview. They can’t release the interview. But they can say what maybe Trump said in order to hurt him.
