54 models affected.

Toshiba has issued a recall for Li-Ion battery packs sold with certain models of its laptops and notebooks due a risk of the device catching fire.

The hardware company yesterday advised customers to immediately turn off their PC and remove their battery to check whether their device was affected.

The vendor is offering free replacement battery packs for customers with affected units.

Around 54 different PC models are affected, sold nationally from retail stores like Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi from June 2011 to September 2015. A full list can be found here.

"There is a risk that the rechargeable battery pack may overheat, cause smoke or may ignite," Toshiba warned.

"If the defect occurs, there is a risk of a fire or a burn hazard to consumers."

Fellow hardware vendor Panasonic was also this week forced to recall rechargeable battery packs due to a fire hazard.

Panasonic CF-S10 ruggedised laptops built between April 2012 and June 2013 were affected.

From what I have read, Oz is simply where the first instances where this problem has been detected. The battery packs are usable over many different model types, and one would be wise to check to see if one of the model types listed was usable in a different country’s imported models, since they are applicable in so very many instances.

Oh, I should add: while different model types can be specifically tailored for specific countries, the battery packs manufactured are not subjected to any such specialization.

A 16V 8Ah battery with a specific pinout will work on any generic version of the model it is designed for. A model designated “Latitude 6410a” or a “Latitude 6410d” or a “Latitude 6410eRevC” can be specifically designed for certain areas/countries...

But the battery packs that power them are identical.

Plus, similar battery packs work across many different model types, although sometimes with differing Amp/Hour ratings or sometimes minor cosmetic differences.

As long as the pinout is the same.

Toshiba is on my Lifetime Boycott List, and they should be on yours, too.

Note that it is not just Toshiba that is having some difficulties, and remember that the individual batteries may be the same across different mfg’s battery packs in the same way that something like a USB jack in many different products may come from a single generic manufacturer but affect many different end-companies.

That is not why Toshiba is on my Lifetime Boycott List.

Toshiba is on that list because they circumvented US export control laws to sell militarily restricted equipment to the Soviet Union, which the Soviets used to produce highly sophisticated propellers for their Akula Class Attack Submarines.

Toshiba knew exactly what they were doing, and they did it for the money. That is why they are on my Lifetime Boycott List and they should be on yours, too.

You make the same case I do but with the difference that it is about BJ Clintoon giving away CDs of our proprietary technology data (not including the patent files) for “campaign contributions”.

Above and beyond what he did with Loral and the missile and rocketry technology.
