An Indian may be the first known human being to have been killed by a meteorite hit. Authorities said that a small celestial body struck a southern college campus, killing a bus driver and injuring three others in an incident initially reported as a bomb.

The "mysterious explosion" that took place on Saturday in Vellore, a city in the south Indian state of Tamil, has been confirmed as a meteorite impact by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

I would be willing to bet, that if he ever thought about how he was going to croak, that was one way he never dreamed about.

I can finally relax. The chance of two people getting struck down by a meteorite in the same century are infinitesimally (took a while to get that spelled right) small.

Wow.... amazingly relevant. Love the last paragraph. How did you know the writing?

I’ve been a Leiber fan since I was a kid, reading my dad’s SF collection. (Even got to meet him once!) If you like that story, try his short novel, “The Big Time,” also about the Change Wars. Fun read. :)

I have been a voracious SCIFI reader since I was about 10 years old. Don’t remember any Lieber stuff, but thanks for the heads up. I will read his stuff. That one you posted was rather engaging.

Leiber might be a bit before your time. (It’s before my time too, but my dad started collecting his SF about 1940.) “The Big Time” won the Hugo in 1958. Seems to stand up pretty well.

More likely to be a piece of man made space junk (reentering satellite fragment, rocket stage fragment, etc) than a meteorite would be my guess.

Lieber wrote on a number of themes, with a number of books and a lot of stand-alone short stories. Aside from the Time Wars stories, his other well-known books & stories are about Fahfrd & the Gray Mouser — sort of a Conan-like world, with lots of added snark. They’re fun reads. :)

Karma is nothing but dumb luck.

I used to think that, then Hillary's campaign came along.

I'm convinced karma's a bitch.
