Why does Trump wish to increase the ethanol mandate?

He wants to reduce US dependence on foreign oil.

I don't know.

He is pandering to the Iowa caucus.

We’re talking about exporting oil. The “Reducing reliance on foreign” is a strawman.

I like Trump, but this is just pandering to the corn whores and it is definitely against this country’s best interests.

As a policy AND a fuel additive, ethanol subsidy is a no-go in my book on all counts.

Me, too. He cut a deal.

If he wanted less foreign oil (Canada is the one we import the most oil from), he could call for a tariff on imported oil, remove a few restrictions, and we'd produce our own. We have proven we are fully capable of that, especially in the last 10 years, when domestic production outstripped the Saudis.

You cannot be president unless you get elected!

A few billions to the farmers never hurt. Farmers do not buy Lamborghini's, they buy John Deere and Case.

It is a subsidy that stays in the country.

The better question would be, why wouldn’t Trump support government subsidies?

It’s not like he has ever had an ideological problem with them. I don’t think the idea that the government should be limited has ever crossed his mind.

Those that support Ethanol do so for two reasons.

* Make America energy independent

America has produced so much oil, has so much inventory, the whole sector is collapsing, pump prices now around $1.50 or less.

* Ethanol is supported by the Man-made Global Warming crowd as clean alternative to oil.

Any "clean alternative" is obliterated by its production & processing carbon footprint.

I don’t disagree, uplc! I think if he had a better idea to replace it with, at this time, he might have started them thinking about that. I don’t call it ‘pandering’. I think he was reassuring them, honestly, that he does not support pulling the rug out from under their industry.

It’s hard to imagine him supporting anything that would reduce manufacturing in America.

Well he does support subsidies for wind energy.

He’ll get to sugar when the campaign in sugar country warms up.

The answer is simple, he wants to win Iowa. The real question ought to be, “what will he say February 15”?

"A few billions to the farmers never hurt. Farmers do not buy Lamborghini's, they buy John Deere and Case. It is a subsidy that stays in the country."

There are so few farmers left in the country that you can practically count them in a few minutes. Most farms are run by large agribusinesses. Most farm equipment costs more than a Lamborghini. The whole need for farm subsidies is now simply subsidies for large businesses. Burning ethanol for fuel is one of the most stupid subsidies you could imagine. By the time you subtract the diesel fuel and electricity to run the equipment, and the petroleum to make the fertilizer, the amount of energy you gain is near zero.
