The US Navy is planning to make job titles gender-neutral - putting the future of long-established names like 'midshipman' in doubt. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus ordered a review of all job titles to determine whether references to 'man' can be removed from positions such as seaman and yeoman. The review was set up 'to ensure (titles) were representative of all sailors and did not discriminate based on gender', the Navy announced.

Don’t tell Muslims about the Poop Deck
Just tell the ‘helmsperson’ which way to steer...Apparently port is the default direction.
If the change the word seaman to seaperson in navel manuals and other documents it will cost the nations millions of dollars to do nothing more than change that single word on thousands of documents.
And what good will have been done. NONE
We use to joke about this when I was on active duty more than 20 years ago. We made a list of terms that would have to change:
Cockpit - Pilot Workstation
Airman - Air Person

They skirted the issue [pun intended] by dropping entirely my rating, one of the oldest in the Navy, of Radioman. No more sparky. It’s some kind of technician now, a linguistic castrati.
This is what our military has come to over the last 7 years...
“It is, as long as you never leave your buddyâs behind!”
hmmm ....
I like how the article shows Army and Coast Guard personnel. Good job, journalist.
But that wasn’t for sexism-related reasons. It was to make “Radioman” sound more impressive. Like changing “janitor” to “sanitation engineer”
“If the change the word seaman to seaperson in navel manuals”
Can’t have any MANuals.
Since they also dropped the requirement to learn Morse code, maybe the Navy’s new radiomen should just be called tuner fish.
In the Navy, do they leave it in their buddy’s behind?
