Alvis Edgar "Buck" Owens, Jr. (August 12, 1929 â March 25, 2006) was an American musician, singer, songwriter and band leader who had 21 No. 1 hits on the Billboard country music charts with his band the Buckaroos. They pioneered what came to be called the Bakersfield sound, a reference to Bakersfield, California, the city Owens called home and from which he drew inspiration for what he preferred to call American music.[1]
While Owens originally used fiddle and retained pedal steel guitar into the 1970s, his sound on records and onstage was always more stripped-down and elemental, incorporating elements of rock and roll. His signature style was based on simple storylines, infectious choruses, a twangy electric guitar, an insistent rhythm supplied by a drum track placed forward in the mix, and high two-part harmonies featuring Owens and his guitarist Don Rich.[2]
Beginning in 1969, Owens co-hosted the TV series Hee Haw with Roy Clark. He left the cast in 1986. The accidental death of Rich, his best friend, in 1974 devastated him for years and abruptly halted his career until he performed with Dwight Yoakam in 1988. Owens died on March 25, 2006 shortly after performing at his Crystal Palace restaurant, club and museum in Bakersfield.
Owens is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

How could anyone not have respect for Buck? Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting!
Buck Owens and Don Rich were always fun to watch. They had a lot of fun and they both looked like little stinkers! Always smiling like they were up to some sort of mischief!
I was raised watching Saturday night country music shows and remember when it was announced that Don Rich died. I was very young, but it seems like he was killed in a motorcycle accident on his way to the show. If I’m wrong, please correct me.
Thanks for this blast from the past!
For a period of about five years, my parents took me to Bardwell School in Aurora, Illinois where Buck Owens put on a show. It were pretty good.
The Beatles were quite the fans of Buck Owens and the Buckaroos. Don Rich’ play on the Telecaster was some of the best ever recorded. I believe Rich even was using distortion and fuzz on some of his last recordings with Buck. Buck Owens was a good guitar player also as he even played flamenco style music.
I don’t think I ever saw him perform live.
He was fun to watch, too, on Hee-Haw with Roy Clark.
I think Don was going to meet his family at an outing or vacation spot when he had the motorcycle wreck.
I read a story about him. In the middle of the night he got a call and somebody said they were out of gas on the freeway and needed him to bring a jug. He got up and was dressing and getting directions at the same time and when he was about to hang up he said, “Oh, by the way, who is this?”
Why is Don Rich always smiling?
Because he’s Don Rich!
The Beatles covered “Act Naturally”. They would get studio cuts from the producers too.
I read that Buck Owens never got over the death of Don Rich. They were like brothers. It was great to see him years later appear in Dwight Yoakam’s music video for the “Streets of Bakersfield”.
Buck Owens was a huge influence on music. CCR owed a lot to him as well.
