It’s amazing as much as he smoked and drank and as portly as he was that he made it to 90.

He suffered a serious head wound and broken ribs.

The guy that hit him was very upset and thought he was going to get in a lot of trouble. Instead, when Winston got out of the hospital, he invited him over to his room at the Waldorf-Astoria for tea and gave him an autographed copy of one of his books.

That's so true. Amazing considering.

Churchill reminds me of family for some reason. I feel like if I had met him, I would have gotten on with him very well. :)

My English granddad rolled his own fags his whole life...no filters, obviously. He wasn't much of drinker, but he lived to be 90, too. I think with his "fags" they were unlit and soggy and just hanging out of his mouth most of the time.

This is me good old granddad in London...maybe sometime around the war years. I'm not sure of exact date.

Yes, if there is one historical figure I could have dinner with, Churchill is my first choice.

Most definitely. Benjamin Franklin, to me, is another one that would be lots of fun to meet. I’m smiling just thinking about meeting him and Churchill.

When it came down to whether it would be Churchill or Lord Halifax replacing Chamberlain as PM, there were many who feared Churchill getting the job because of what happened at Gallipoli, most Parliamentarians probably would have chosen Halifax over Churchill.

Here is another close call for him mentioned in the documentary:

One very cool customer: Churchill, puffing on cigar and wearing dashing aviator glasses while being tailed by the Luftwaffe during ‘most daring flight of the whole war’

File under “useless knowledge: Churchill had a lisp. When he had to have false teeth, the man who made them had to create them to retain the lisp which was unique to him. (Saw it last night on “Strange Inheritance” rerun on Fox Business.)

I like this part in the story you linked. (See, its advantageous to be portly.)

“The Oxford University physicist complied, but couldn’t resist the teasing suggestion that Churchill’s chubbiness had cushioned him from the full force of the car.”
