Been there, done that, don’t want to do it again. At least not without adding fiber tablets to the MREs and some probiotics might not be a bad idea.
When I was a kid in the 50s (USMC dad) my brother and I thought the K rations we got our hands on were uber cool and yummy.
“must be capable of withstanding parachute drops from 1,250 feet”
“As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.” Funniest show ever. I laughed for days.
I thought MRE’s were specifically designed to cause constipation in order to reduce the number of times a soldier has to respond to a call of nature.
Never had one. I’m from the C-Rations era.
If they’re so worried about gut bacteria why don’t they pack probiotics with the meals?

Uh, there’s already hundreds of thousands in the service that have to do what they tell them. Why don’t they just tell some of them to do it?
I’d volunteer, if I didn’t have to eat the whole thing! Those meals are LOADED with calories; though the one time I tried them they weren’t that bad tasting.

Perfect opportunity for a starving grad student
They need to feed a control group C Rations.
Suggestion - cut a deal with Sheriff Joe letting him pick some volunteers from his jail who have been well behaved and would like a treat for a few weeks.
I ate MRE’s for twelve days while my Seabee unit was deployed to 29 Palms for desert warfare training. We were out in the boonies with no hot food for two weeks. Never really finished one off in one sitting, too much food. I lost about 20 lbs while out there, mainly to dehydration by the environment and getting a couple layers of skin sandblasted off.
It’s not just a job, is $89.50 a month.
I bought some surplus a few years ago - the spaghetti and chili macaroni were pretty good.
How many Preppers rotate MRE’s into their daily diet to keep their stock rotated?
They’re a great inventory due to their versatility. Great for short duration emergencies like flooding, snowbound. Great for your scout pack. Tiresome as home base food but very tradable, too heavy for a serious GTFO bag though.
Traded into a few awhile back, not that bad, fun to take to work for lunch. Worst part is depackaging the items. A single flat square of 4 soda crackers, sealed in plastic. Remember when crackers came like that instead of sleeves and you’d have to snap them apart? Crumbs flyin’ all over hell...
I ran into a guy at a gun show in the early 90s who practically gave them away. He let me have 12 cases of 12 for only $32. I remember thinking he must have gotten them for free after a recent hurricane.
Anyway we went out to his pickup and I got the 12 cases. He must have had another 50.
They turned out to be pretty good tho there were a few I didn’t care for. I remember there was a cheese spread in maybe a quarter of the meals which I thought was great with the crackers.
Now I can see how they would not be good for everyday but eating maybe one a week, I liked them.
I did end up with a bunch of book matches and unused heaters.
I’m not sure about that but I do know what eating C rats for three months in a row is like.
21 straight days!? You would be constipated and about ready to kill someone.
You had better be working out like a demon too. Those things are calorie loaded!
Wouldn’t the gut bacteria in the field be determined more by the poor sanitary conditions experienced there than the food itself?
