The Force Awakens is spectacularly replete with the handiwork of the avowed Social Justice Warrior JJ Abrams. So where can I possibly start in my criticisms? From the casting, which puts minorities and women incessantly and ridiculously in your face to make a political point (not tell a story), to the laziest of all space battles, the problems with the Episode 7 are more than numerous.
Let us make no mistake: Abrams is a capable filmmaker, when he wants to be. Parts with General Hux, especially his speech and the destruction of the Hosnian system, are glorious. The visuals, not just those with CGI, are stunning. Abramsâ mission, though, is to distract viewers with impressive scenes and some chunks of capably written dialogue so as to implant his take on âgirl powerâ and safe spaces for non-whites.
The female Rey, who it is heavily implied is Lukeâs daughter, is the most underdeveloped character yet in over 14 hours of Star Wars films. Her story arc is practically-speaking non-existent and only the veneer of her sadness about her family leaving her on Jakku is painted over it. Whereas with other major Force-wielders in the series their abilities have previously developed or are developed over years, Rey seemingly does it in less than 12 seconds, rather than parsecs. Her whole trajectory in the film reeks of âgod modeâ, which for non-gamers like myself refers to the cheat codes that make a game character invincible.

Pffffffffffffffffttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
Agreed. It just reeks of the same kind of approach that the last Mad Max took. Even Jar Jar had more depth as comic relief than Rey as a main character.
If those gratuitous appeals to SJWs were removed, it would improve the overall movie.
Loved the film, but the main problem I had with it was that Rey doesn’t seem to have any flaws, she is good at everything. She is not a very well-rounded character and that is a major flaw when she is the protagonist. Still, it was good to see the light sabre duels and revisit old characters.
SPOILER ALERT BELOW-WARNING! LOL
I agree she reminded me of the girl in class who always got 100 on her tests and bragged about it to everybody.
Her problem is the end..Lando sat with Chewy in Empire but you knew it was temporary. She will never be Han and to insinuate that she could do things better than Han on the Falcon was too much.
I may see this when it comes out on cable, but there was nothing in the commercials to indicate it was anything other than feel-good affirmative action BS. I live in the real world where certain groups clamor for promotions and money but don’t want to work a minute longer than the standard work day - and with a few exceptions are hardly outstanding super-competent employees.
Haven’t seen it yet. But, I’m tired of these skinny little girls turned into physical heroes. Jessica Alba comes to mind.
Wait. . .what. . .you mean all those 5’, 100lb females can’t beat the stuffing out of those 6’7”, 300lb men. . . .really?
Just like everything else coming out of Hollywood, these days.
The last couple of years, I've been watching Korean and Taiwanese movies and TV dramas, instead. Though sometimes trite and repetitive, they are completely free of mandatory social justice lectures. Not one word about minority or gay rights...and women even lose verbal exchanges to men once in a while. :)
I may see this when it comes out on cable when it is under the heading of Free Movies and I’m bored with nothing else to do and happen to remember there is such an option ...
What a surprise! < /s>
I would have been shocked if it wasn’t.
Eh, I don’t care to work any longer than the standard work day either. Who really does? I know some at my workplace in management who’s whole life is the company, they work 10 hour days and get called after hours. Sure they’re wealthy but to me it just wouldn’t be worth it. I’d spend more of my life with the jerks at work than I would my own family.
I enjoyed it. It was good, not great.
I liked Rey. I didn’t care so much for Fin and that didn’t have anything to do with the fact that he was black. He just wasn’t a very good actor - although in Star Wars acting is superfluous.
Carrie Fisher bore little resemblance to her younger self - too much plastic surgery and hard times, I guess.
Ford was what you would expect.
The general was outstanding in his Hitleresque speech. (Same guy was the protagonist in Ex Machina). Good actor.
Chewy was the best ever.
It’s Star Wars IV, V, and VI all rolled into one. Obviously they are trying to make social points. I thought it was crap. Nothing redeeming about it that I could find. Big budget films are INCAPABLE of being politically incorrect. Too much money, too many friends and hangers-on to be lost, and too few genuinely talented writers.
This falls into the category of “had to see it, will never watch it again.” I would be amazed if the DVD sales compares at all to the ticket sales.
Or the category of “Oh well there’s nothing else on, so I may as well give it a shot ... but then fall asleep from boredom or predictability 15 minutes in”.
I struggled to stay awake. It was very predictable.
