Tried by Fire - Winter battles by 84th Infantry Division in Battle of the Bulge, crossing of the Roer and Rhine, and the desperate race to the Elbe. The Battle of the Bulge (16 December 1944 -- 25 January 1945) was the German offensive campaign launched through the Ardennes forested region of Wallonia in Belgium, France and Luxembourg on the Western Front toward the end of World War II in Europe. The surprise attack caught the Allied forces completely off guard and became the costliest battle in terms of casualties for the United States, whose forces bore the brunt of the attack, during all of World War II.

The Big Picture, U.S. Army
The Big Picture was a TV documentary series back in the early 50s that I used to watch as a kid.
Today, kids get to watch shows about how America is destroying the planet.

If we had all the girls and homosexuals that the Defense Dept. wants to allow in the infantry now it would have gone much better. I hope you sense the sarcasm in my post.

I was going to make the same comment, I remember watching it as a kid too.

A combination of shows like that, along with “Combat”, and a career Army brother, caused me to beat the draft by enlisting.

The battle would have gone a lot better for the U.S. forces had their infantry unit ranks been at least one-third female.

Glad we're so much wiser now.

Grandpa served as forward scout for 774th Field Artillery Battalion, which I think was under the 9th Army. He was in Holland, France, Germany and Italy and fought at the Bulge. He was 19 when he was drafted and I laughed when Grandma told me how surprised they were that he was drafted because they (she and Grandpa) thought he was too old to be included in those who were drafted.

Grandpa on the right. On the back of this picture he wrote "The flag *was* on this house."

On the same date as your uncle was WIA, our family member with the 70th Inf. Div,
was listed as MIA near Phillipsborg, Fance near the German border.
He was later reported a POW at Stalag 9A in Germany. He was liberated on Good Friday 1945.
