Illinois air travelers may face stricter security measures in 2016

It's growing increasingly likely that anyone carrying an Illinois driver's license will face even more hassle at the airport in 2016.

The Department of Homeland Security has denied the state's bid for another extension to become compliant with the Real ID Act, which means identification cards currently issued by the Illinois secretary of state's office won't meet federal standards for clearing airport security.

More immediately, as of Jan. 10, 2016, Illinois-issued IDs will no longer suffice for accessing U.S. military bases and other federal facilities where an ID is required for entry, the secretary of state's office said.

The Department of Homeland Security plans to announce within the next week when the standard will also extend to airport security, and has pledged to give travelers at least 120 days of notice. That would bring the rule into effect by mid-2016 at the earliest.

Whenever the rule takes effect, travelers with an Illinois ID will need a U.S. passport to pass through security, even for a domestic flight. Those without a passport will still be able to fly but will be subject to an additional security process yet to be defined.

David Druker, a spokesman for the secretary of state's office, said the state was surprised to learn Tuesday that Homeland Security officials had not granted an extension.

"We felt it was misguided and shortsighted on their part," he said.

The secretary of state's office has already undertaken many steps sought by Homeland Security, he said, such as a facial recognition program that compares photos in a state database and detailed checks on immigration and Social Security records.

But Illinois has otherwise been one of many states resistant to the Real ID Act, which was passed by Congress in 2005 after a 9/11 Commission recommendation to tighten standards on government-issued IDs.

“Airport security” is going to be an even bigger joke with the BLM slimeball cry babies now invading airports to protest about their miserable lives. There’s another thread on their invasion of MSP yesterday.

I was a bit unsure about the new Real ID Act requirements here in Georgia, but I read the requirements, provided the information and got my renewal.

As much as I hate the government heaping their intrusions on me, I am comforted by the fact that it (these requirements in Georgia, at least) make it extremely difficult for an illegal to get a driver’s license.

As a Vet inducted in Georgia, my license is free forever....saves a wee bit of money.

Simple to get through an airport - just wear a hijab.

I hear you.

But there are now some states which give drivers licenses to illegal aliens. So the intent of the real ID act is being undermined.

Yes. If your state doesn’t keep illegals off the DL rolls, then the Real ID Act is useless as far as I’m concerned.

So, while the govt continues to restrict Citizen travel, infringe upon our lives, Rights, Liberty and Freedom it also lets in ‘refugees’/visa/students w/out vetting or closing the border....

Only in Liberal logic land.

Standards to assure the identity prior to issuance, and measures to make the IDs harder to counterfeit. Not a national ID card, an attempt by the federal government to make sure state IDs actually mean something.

“...make it extremely difficult for an illegal to get a driver’s license.”

No problemo. They just drive without one.

Not a national ID card, an attempt by the federal government to make sure state IDs actually mean something.

Not exactly. More like an attempt to force every state to create an ID, and provide the federal government access to the state databases which makes the state ID in essence a national ID card.

Issues they have with state databases are over things like keeping copies of the driver's pictures in the database, and having linkage to social security numbers. Why for example does a drivers license database record need to contain a social security number if the person with the license had their identity, citizenship, age etc. verified when they received the license?

Of course the reality is that the whole concept of safety through identity is based on a false premise. The bad guys are adept at creating false identity information, and even if they aren't the federal government drowns in data or is too inept to use the information they have.

Building a security system which relies upon identification documents is foolish, particularly when faked actual government issued ID documents are readily available from corrupt government employees around the world.
