Journey (band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Journey is an American rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1973, composed of former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. The band has gone through several phases; its strongest commercial success occurred between 1978 and 1987. During that period, the band released a series of hit songs, including 1981's "Don't Stop Believin'", which in 2009 became the top-selling track in iTunes history amongst songs not released in the 21st century.[2][3][4] Its parent studio album, Escape, the band's eighth and most successful, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and yielded another of their most popular singles, "Open Arms". Its 1983 follow-up album, Frontiers, was almost as successful in the United States, reaching No. 2 and spawning several successful singles; it broadened the band's appeal in the United Kingdom, where it reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart. Journey enjoyed a successful reunion in the mid-1990s and later regrouped with a series of lead singers.

Sales have resulted in two gold albums, eight multi-platinum albums, and one diamond album (including seven consecutive multi-platinum albums between 1978 and 1987). They have had eighteen Top 40 singles in the US (the second most without a Billboard Hot 100 number one single behind Electric Light Orchestra with 20), six of which reached the Top 10 of the US chart and two of which reached No. 1 on other Billboard charts, and a No. 6 hit on the UK Singles Chart in "Don't Stop Believin'". In 2005, "Don't Stop Believin'" reached No. 3 on iTunes downloads. Originally a progressive rock band, Journey was described by AllMusic as having cemented a reputation as "one of America's most beloved (and sometimes hated) commercial rock/pop bands" after 1978, when they redefined their sound by embracing pop arrangements on their fourth album, Infinity.[5] According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Journey has sold 47 million albums in the U.S., making them the 28th best-selling band. Their worldwide sales have reached close to 90 million records, making them one of the world's best-selling bands of all time.[6][7] A 2005 USA Today opinion poll named Journey the fifth best American rock band in history.[8][9] Their songs have become arena rock staples and are still played on rock radio stations across the world. Journey ranks No. 96 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists Of All Time.

Evolution is my favorite. Neil Schon is an amazing guitarist. Listen to Santana’s third album where he trades riffs with Santana on songs like “No One to Depend On”, “Taboo”, and “Jungle Strut”. I never get tired of that album.

Neil Schon has some excellent solo albums out. “I on U” and “Beyond the Thunder” are examples of exceptional guitar work

Bad rap from who? Usually when someone criticizes a great band, it turns out they're into total garbage. Junk like Metallica, or worse.

I’m a late comer on to Journey, that started one night watching the Netflix doc on them looking for a new singer.

I was fascinated by them.

Neil is on auto pilot.

I see since the doc, they sacked the drummer, Neil got divorced, and I don’t know what’s happened to Arneda? Is he still with the group? Still married to the same gal, or he back on the drugs and alc?

Just calling it as I see it. I like Journey. I think they are great. But in years of reading musician and fan sites alike, there’s lots of hate for them across a variety of music tastes. I find it’s most often from people that hate 80s music in general.

I also like Metallica/thrash metal, Prog rock/metal, retro/synthwave, Johnny Cash, Two Steps From Hell, Post Rock and Punk so I’ve seen it a lot of places and across genres.

Wasn’t he like 15 when Santana grabbed him?

The guitar solo in Who's Crying Now was the first I learned to play.

Sure I can learned the notes and the timing, but I could never make it sound as sorrowful as Neal Shon did.

Agree, but Journey jumped the shark in the early 80’s by letting Perry apply his Pop schickt.

As a huge rock fan, I know there is generally no right or wrong opinion on whose best, most talented, etc.Just opinions.

But IMO, taking account longevity, talent, and content, I think Rush is the greatest of all time. Again just my opinion.

Their omission so long from RR HOF so long was the greatest travesty and oversights ever.

Lifeson's blah blah blah acceptance speech was the greatest RR HOF FU moment in history.too.

The Perry stuff is OK to me for what it is...pop. But I can understand fans of the older stuff not being big on it. I don’t think they ‘sold out’ so much as evolved in a direction that split the fanbase. It was still Journey, but not the same Journey. If that makes sense.

It kinds sorta in a way reminds me of Blaze Baily fronting Iron Maiden. It was still Maiden. The music was every bit there. But a lot of people hated the vocalist. Partly because of his voice, but mostly because he wasn’t Bruce Dickenson.

Rush is great. Red Barchetta does it for me every time. But I like the whole catalog overall.

Yea, the HOF exclusion was pure stupidity. Pure $$$/politics.

Just goes to show ya that everyone sees things differently- I’ve always thought that Rush was the most overrated band ever. Not trying to start an argument- just musing on how different people’s tastes can be.
