ABBA

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ABBA (stylised ᗅᗺᗷᗅ) were a Swedish pop group formed in Stockholm in 1972. With members Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, ABBA became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, topping the charts worldwide from 1975 to 1982. They won the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 at the Dome in Brighton, UK, giving Sweden its first triumph in the contest, and were the most successful group ever to take part in the competition.

ABBA sold over 300 million albums and singles worldwide,[5][6][7] while according to its label the Universal Music Group the band has sold over 375 million records as of January 2010.[8] The group's record sales figure is uncertain, and various estimates range from over 140 to over 500 million sold records.[9] This makes them one of the best-selling music artists, and the second best-selling music group of all time, after the Beatles. ABBA was the first group to come from a non-English-speaking country to enjoy consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the UK, Ireland, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. The group also enjoyed significant success in Latin American markets, and recorded a collection of their hit songs in Spanish.

During the band's active years, Fältskog & Ulvaeus and Lyngstad & Andersson were married. At the height of their popularity, both relationships were suffering strain which ultimately resulted in the collapse of the Ulvaeus–Fältskog marriage in 1979 and the Andersson–Lyngstad marriage in 1981. These relationship changes were reflected in the group's music, with later compositions including more introspective, brooding, dark lyrics.[10]

After ABBA disbanded in December 1982, Andersson and Ulvaeus achieved success writing music for the stage, while Lyngstad and Fältskog pursued solo careers with mixed success. ABBA's music declined in popularity until several films, notably Muriel's Wedding (1994) and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), revived public interest in the group and the spawning of several tribute bands. In 1999, ABBA's music was adapted into the successful musical Mamma Mia! that toured worldwide. A film of the same name, released in 2008, became the highest-grossing film in the United Kingdom that year.

ABBA were honoured at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005, when their hit "Waterloo" was chosen as the best song in the competition's history.[11] The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 15 March 2010.[12]

Gold: Greatest Hits (ABBA album)

Gold: Greatest Hits is a compilation album of recordings by Swedish pop group ABBA. It was released on 21 September 1992 through PolyGram, the first compilation to be released after the company had acquired Polar Music and thus the rights to the ABBA back catalogue. In 1998, PolyGram was in turn merged into what is now the Universal Music Group.

With sales in excess of 29 million copies,[3] it is the best-selling ABBA album as well as one of the best-selling albums worldwide. Since 1992, Gold has been released several times, most notably in 2008 to coincide with the release of the film Mamma Mia! and most recently in 2014 to mark the group's 40th Anniversary of winning the Eurovision Song Contest.

Even though I was a hard rock fan, I had a secret crush on Agnatha. Wow, she was hot.

What living, breathing male didn’t have a crush on Agnetha?

Hot Scandinavian babe who could sing like a bird and look cute and sexy at the same time.
What’s not to like?
And she still looks great to be 66 years old.

Trivia: Anni-Frid (Frida), the other female in ABBA was the wartime daughter of a Norwegian mother and German father diplomat.

Instead of having her child known as the daughter of a collaborator, and fearing for her own safety, Frida’s mother moved to Sweden.
Strangely Frida later married a German Count.

You know at least one person in ABBA was Heavy Metal.

Anni-Frid Lyngstad. We actually covered this song back in the 80’. It rocked.

“I feel like a raging homo when I liisen to it because of pix like that.”

That’s Western European discotheque. It infected the US in the
80’. The girls look hot though.

ABBA sucks.

That they made the Rock Hall of Fame before Alice Cooper, Rush, Chicago, Steve Miller, KISS and other legitimate rock acts makes the HOF a joke. Of course, it is all PC claptrap so long as Jann Wenner is in control. But for him, that syrupy Swedish nightmare would permanently be on the outside looking in.

I’m surprised Wenner has not had The Carpenters inducted.

Heavy Metal? I got about a minute and a half in and heard no metal.

You and the guys must have put the Metal into it, yourselves.

There was otherwise no metal there. More like aluminum- colored, thick plastic wrap.

the pic was made small, on purpose

“You and the guys must have put the Metal into it, yourselves.”

We did it to a lot of songs back then. The Beatles “I saw her standing there” The Yardbirds “Shapes of things” and so
on. Theres two ways to do covers.
1. Play them as close as you can to the original version.
2. Play them your way. Creating a completely new version
For example: The Yardbirds version of Shapes,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jc17DqcA6Qc

Gary Moores version,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNxLwM0mROc

Wish you could have been there. You should have heard what we did with Cameo, The Ohio Players, Rufus, Bootsy Collins
and Sly Stone tunes. If you know how, you can make Funk rock.

Maybe the gay clubs here but that style evaporated by 80/81 here I thought. At least where I was. Once disco died, it was all New wave zippers, denim and leather.

If you guys are into classical and opera you should keep your eye out for Patricia Janeckova, an up and coming young Czech Republic soprano. Very talented young girl.

As fascinating as the outfits, the worldwide fame, and the interpersonal relationships/marriages were, the production was critical to the ABBA success despite 99% of listeners being unaware of it except to say that they could recognize it and loved it.

In one ABBA documentary, their longtime engineer demonstrated the ‘the secret’ - two tape decks playing the same master with one deck slowed down by the slightest increment. The result? An expansive, almost orchestral sound for instruments and those distinctive multi-layered harmonies. The lush, saturated sound of analog equipment didn’t hurt either.
