I think the Russians know a thing or two about fighting the Mujahideen.
It is far easier to take the country than it is to occupy it and administer it.
They found that out and so did we......
However, Russia has a big advantage in Syria if they can keep Assad in power - he has proven he could run the country and has the tools needed to do it. Nobody can run Afghanistan and Iraq was only ruled through an iron fist and fear.
Syrian Civil War isn’t going to end overnight. Most likely 3-5 years left.
