The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.'

Happy cold and cloudy Sunday all...

What a lineup tonight...Christmas season has begun...starting strong with Phil Harris...Fiber McGee...B level crime with Casey Crime Photographer...and ending wonderfully with an iconic Lux, Miracle on 34th Street (with most of the original cast)...

How was Thanksgiving?

Hope yours was wonderful. Enjoy the show tonight.

Hi, Vision. It was nice. We stayed home and didn’t see anyone.

Was your trip to Williamsburg good?

Yea it was good, went fast.

I got everyone together and had them listen to the Phil Harris show from last week. Like times gone by. About 12 of us. It was fun.

Did you roast a turkey?

Oh, that sounds nice! They enjoyed the old radio show. :-)

I’ve never baked a turkey before, because (1) I don’t like turkey very much, and (2) I’ve always gone to family dinners where someone else did the turkey. But, for the first time I did find a recipe for an apple cider brined turkey breast. It was good, although I prefer the dark meat. With just me and Keith, a breast was too big, as it was.

Don't like turkey? Wow. Huh.

If you like dark meat you will probably like duck. I get them cheap at costco, very good and easy.

Ah, duck’s too greasy and gamey. Keith doesn’t really like turkey, either. The white meat’s too dry. Chicken is WAY better than turkey, in our opinion. The best way to have a turkey is to fry it. THEN, the thing is super juicy.

I never thought about freezing sides, such as sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, etc... for later use. Is that something you can do? Do those types of things freeze well?

Turkey was all gone....

Yes, most side dishes like that will freeze quite well (dressing, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole). It’s a shame to waste such good food. We’ll crave it again in a few days. :-) Of course, it will also keep in the fridge for several days, as it is.

It is a shame, I would normally never be so wasteful, especially the homemade dressing! I will definitely never do that again now that I know. Christmas will b here soon and it is the same meal so I will make sure I freeze all left-overs.
Thanks!

You bet! In fact, most foods freeze well—the meats, turkey, gravy, etc. You think about the frozen dinners in the supermarket. Same deal. :-)

As Gina said, yes. I even freeze bits of sauces to save later. My deep freeze goes to -10f and a year later it’s still pretty good.
