Don Williams

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Don Williams (born May 27, 1939, Floydada, Texas, United States) is an American country singer, songwriter and a 2010 inductee to the Country Music Hall of Fame. He grew up in Portland, Texas, and graduated in 1958 from Gregory-Portland High School. After seven years with the folk-pop group Pozo-Seco Singers, he began his solo career in 1971, singing popular ballads and amassing 17 number one country & western hits.

His straightforward yet smooth bass-baritone voice, soft tones, and imposing build earned him the nickname: "Gentle Giant" of country music.[1]

"I don't believe in superstars, organic food or foreign cars..."

That's about as upbeat as Don Williams gets. Love it.

Good, manly voice too.

Aye. And smooth...like a slow, silky swig of Southern Comfort.

"...like a slow, silky swig of Southern Comfort"

I have my wife convinced that Southern Comfort is good for relief of cold symptoms...it does help, but then I have to go around suppressing coughs, etc. to make it look like it does work.

Interesting that the linked You Tube collection doesn’t include “Good Ole Boys Like Me.” Written by the great Bob McDill; arguably one of the greatest country songs ever written.

“I have my wife convinced that Southern Comfort is good for relief of cold symptoms...”

Mother’s canary developed a case of bird pneumonia. A friend who was a specialty bird breeder advised her to use and eye dropper to feed the very sick canary some Old Taylor Bourbon whiskey and Southern Comfort. Worked like a charm. The canary perked right up, got well, and sang its heart out in appreciation.

Have always love his music - he was in Tuscaloosa this past winter - late January, I think, at the Bama Theatre, which is a small old theater downtown with great acoustics and atmosphere, high ceiling with gilding and murals. Best concert ever. It was like sitting in his living room.

Then we heard him again in October over in Bremen, Ga.,. During the year, though, he had cancelled some concerts due to illness. In Georgia, he sounded exactly the same but seemed weaker. I just saw an announcement on his website, though that he has concerts lined up for February :-) Hoping he has fully recovered.

“When I was in school I ran with a kid down the street,
And I watched him burn himself up on bourbon and speed
But I was smarter than most, and I could choose
Learned to talk like the man on the six o’clock news
When I was eighteen lord I hit the road
But it really doesn’t matter how far I go...”

Though the song was written to highlight the contrasts and struggles of growing up in the south during the modern transition, it still has relevance to any small-town kid. How many people does this verse speak to? Lord knows I’m one.

"I can still hear the soft southern winds in the live oak trees, And those Williams boys they still mean a lot to me - Hank and Tennessee"

.. "By the light of radio by my bed With Thomas Wolfe whispering in my head"

Deep themes in this one.

Our daughter was named after Don’s song “Amanda”. I liked the name after seeing Amanda Blake (Miss Kitty) in Gunsmoke, but Don William’s song in the early 70’s sealed it for us. What a great singer. Miss hearing him.
